Default 965 Style Blow Off Valve

Gang, while my CIS stuff is out for the engine rebuild, I've been thinking about going with the 965 (964 Turbo) style BOV. This is the "external" style BOV that sits on top of that large diameter elbow. Can anyone advise me on this? What is done with the existing OEM BOV that's located in the housing? How is it disabled? Any other parts needed besides the elbow and BOV? Let's hear it experts!

Here's a picture for reference, from the Eagle Day website:

I just don't know what to do with the old BOV that's inside the manifold housing? Is it removed, or disabled? I think I once read that a piece of PVC pipe could be used to jam it open or closed? Any thoughts?

You have to install something in the old pop-off valve housing to keep it from opening. I knew the measurement for the length of rod you need to install at one time but it has been a while since I have done that. Maybe someone could chime in on that. Or remove the whole pop-off valve housing and make an adaptor to fit between the IC and throttle housing and another to fit between the elbow and and the pipe going down to the turbo. I have seen some people cut the ends off the old housing and weld the holes up. The ones I saw were not done well but I think this is a viable option done in a professional way. Similar to the Kokeln IC set up.

Sandman, I think its a little more complicated than you think.

The stock intercooler is a short neck one. It connects to the BOV assembly which is a ~10lb piece of metal and I believe the overboost switch is also screwed into this assembly.

The 964 and Kokeln are long neck ones hence can use the small BOV.

So, you'll need to replace the intercooler to get rid of the factory BOV assembly.

Nothing is ever easy. For what it's worth though, I'm running the B&B I/C. However, it's really just a bolt in replacement for the stock one.

Well there are plenty of people running around with the Kokeln I/C in their 930s. So something must have been done with the existing BOV and housing. I know that there's a Kokeln installation kit, but it doesn't look like much more than the elbow, BOV, and some hoses.

With the Kokeln, I believe you will remove the factory BOV housing before installing the intercooler.

WOW! Really? When I look at the instructions on how to replace the OEM BOV in that Pelican link that I posted, that housing looks like an enormous and integral part of the intake manifold. SHEESH! You're right, it is more involved than I thought!

The Kokeln assembly does eliminate the whole existing bov housing. The easiest way to use the updated bov and keep the factory IC would be to install a rod to keep the old bov closed. You can use the factory IC and eliminated the old assembly completely but it is more work which I eluded to previously.

It does look intimidating but comes off fairly easy once you get into it

Thanks guys! So then what about the overboost switch, that's on the housing?
