Can I justify headers?
Can anyone tell me how much HP gain I will get from changing over to headers and a more efficient muffler? I'm currently getting 320 hp. My '81 930 is stock standard except for a 1 bar spring and I'm not planning on upgrading the turbo at the moment. I need to justify this project to myself before I tackle my wife!

I would guess about 20 hp. It's usually one of the first mods that people do since it helps all the other mods. It should also help the turbo spool up faster and make the car more drivable.

Headers are one of the best mods you can make (intercooler and turbo being the other two upgrades) They are all about the same price (+/- a few 100), so take you pick. I think I would do headers/muffler first to get the HP, spool up, and throaty exhaust note.

I see the Schnell 930 headers are on sale right now for $799 from Vertex. No heat but could be added for minimal heat requirements. Anyone ever tried these headers. Seem to be about 1/3 the cost of others. There must be a reason. Any thoughts?

All else equal on a stock 930, how much will the spool/boost threshold be dropped by headers (B&B / GHL with heat boxes)? Stock, I see/feel boost at 3500-3600 rpm. Goal for me wouldn't be horspower, rather better around-town responsiveness.

GHL Headers are made with Stainless Type 321. The Schnell headers are made with Stainless Type 304.
Type 304 is a very common stainless steel and it has excellent resistance to oxidation and corrosion by chemicals
Type 321 contains titanium to stablize the metal against chromium carbide formation. It is a more expensive alloy and much better suited to high temperature applications such as jet engine parts, furnace heat treated parts, expansion joints, exhaust manifolds, and high temperature chemical production equipment.
You get what you pay for - to do any better than T321, you are into inconel (an ultra-high nickel steel).

I too have the B&B, I think, but they are cracked and leaking, I get fumigated if I turn on the heater. They are quite old, and I do see a Powerhouse # on them though.

I just got a promo from Vertex and they are selling the schnell headers for $799. I like them and for that price I can buy another set in two years and still come out ahead. The sale price ends soon, so jump inot the bottomless pit with the rest of us. 911Rudy
I tried to attachment the Vertex ad but it was not the correct type of file.

Here is a list of mods I did in the order they were completed:
1 - Larger Intercooler (Andial Sport)
2 - K27-7200 & GHL muffler (big power increase, less lag, good sound)
3 - Air box, fuel head mod, B&B headers, EBC, Tial (.9) - Much more power, huge reduction in lag, great sound. Motor dyno'd @ 422 bhp. Also had the car lowered w/new torsion bars & corner balanced ... car finally looks right and handles much better with out any real road harshness.

I would run the B&Bs. We have gotten a little more power from the collector design then some of the other versions out there. They have a better collector design than most and are well put together. There are issues with all headers that are on cars that have run lean or seen excessive heat on a regular bases. It doesn't matter who's they are. It is all the same. I can show you on about 90% of the stock headers hair line cracks as well. It is a harsh environment and the headers hold up well given the circumstances.

When I bought my B&B headers and muffler, they incl a dyno sheet that showed an increase of around 40hp....I suspect that this is at the crank.
