It may be a dumb question, but why is he seting timing before all the P&C's and heads are on?

Yep the head studs are ARP as are the rod bolts (not pictured), purchased from one of our humble site sponsors: Imagine Auto.

It's just a "mock up" to check the piston to valve clearance and to get a final CR number. What's pictured in the photos will all be broken down again and shipped to me in pieces...I'll be doing the final assembly. I wanted Neil to do the clearance check so that he'd already have the parts in case there was a problem.

I'll also point out that I purchased SC cams from Imagine Auto and I wanted Neil to find out what the "optimal" setting would be for them when I get to the cam timing aspect of the build...he's come up with 1.7mm.

Sandman,

Glad you like the work. I am sure you will be amazed at the quality. By the sounds of things, he has done everything required to build it correctly, other than the assembly. That takes all the worry out of it, but leaves the satisfaction of doing your own assembly. I know you will like it.

Best if Sandman answers this, but I suspect the reason the Cam is in etc, without the rest of the heads on, is the Piston to Head and Piston to Valve Clearance checks are been done. This way if any machining is required, the Pistons can be machined and the CR rechecked.

I love looking at this stuff. If any of you have the chance to visit Performance Developments and see what they offer and do, do so. Neil is always available to answer and share his knowledge.

Well done Sandman.

Performance Developments is in Costa Mesa, CA. Neil was actually willing to let me come out there and assemble the engine with him and his team at his shop. I would loved to have done this, but I'm just juggling too much at the moment.

It's a GOOD THING Stephen is not closer...I'd be working my debts off to him cleaning up oil spills on his shop floor all while me and my family lived in a 930 down by the river!

Thanks! You bet I am! Maybe I'll try to delay things a bit like 125Shifter and RobS! HAHAHAHA! You know make this into a 2 year epic! This is just too much fun!

Sand man,

It's a shame you could not make it out there. I've spent many hours/days there just watching. What I love the most is the level of committment. It may be a very expensive race engine or an older street engine, but the same attention to detail is given. I have seen parts machined or repaired that others could not or would not attempt. I was amazed at the machining that was done on an old engine block from an early Mercedes straight 8 engine. No one else would do it or could do it. Special fixtures were made along with special tooling to machine it. The quality in the tooling and fixturing was beautiful. The end result is always a function of the level of work done.

For those who have seen the level of work to come out of this shop will understand what I am talking about. There is no reward here for me, other than introducing others to what they can have and expect.
