I wrap the end with tape (blue masking tape is what I like to use), cut it (a cut-off wheel makes it a lot easier to get a nice stright end), clean, use a little dish detergent to get the fitting in and then pull the tape out of the fitting. I rarely get any "whiskers" doing that. But when I do I get out my trusty screwdriver ;-).
