Default Oil separator update?

Is there any value i n updating my '77 3.0 Turbo to the oil separator used in the crankcase vent system of the later 3.3s? Why did Porsche add the separator?

Thanks in advance.

It's a black plastic bottle, marked "Purolator", and mounted on the right side of the engine bay, ahead of the oil filler. There's four or five hoses to it, one of which goes down through the engine sheet metal, directly below.

I added it to mine. It helps prevent the cars from sucking oil into the intake under hard acceleration.

Wow, not seen one of these, mine must be missing. Can anyone post a pic ?
Maybe thats why my car would swallow oil up into the IC etc.

They were added in the mid '80s. It is actually a truck part, no big insult of course as the turbo chargers and fuel system are sourced from trucks also.

Thank you for the picture!

It appears that there is an added connection on the oil tank for the drain line from the separator, which would prevent retrofitting it to my car without also changing, or modifying, the oil tank. Am I mistaken?

As jhunt says, I also suspect that it's to prevent soaking the intake tract with oil, which not only is ugly and might interfere with the intercooler, but it might also be a source for detonation. So, it would be a good thing to retrofit, if I could do it without too much fuss.

P.S. Where does the fuel evaporative emission canister live? On my car and the NA 911s, the charcoal canister lives where your oil separator is mounted.

Tom,

Look at your oil tank. You may find a fitting that will receive the drain line. I did on my 78 -- there was an unused port that was covered with a cap. I'm not sure if that port was originally designed to receive the oil separator drain, (because the separator, to my knowledge didn't even exist until 10 years later), but it served that purpose quite well.

I would really like to fit this seperator. I would want a new one. Where would be the best place to buy one ?

I too have a cap on my oil tank (it is the left hand side one without the arrow), is it ok for me to run the drain off from the seperator into my tank ?

Nathan, that's what I did. Don't buy the factory hose that goes from the bottom of the separator to the tank, though. It's the wrong diameter unless you have a later car (like 88 or 89 or so, if I recall, but you may want to confirm). You'll have to adapt down to a smaller line from the separator and then get a barbed fitting (may be a Sportomatic part!) to screw into that port. Then you can run the smaller hose from the separator drain to the tank and use a hose clamp to attach it to the barbed fitting.

BTW, if anyone would like to buy the factory hose that goes from the separator to the tank for the later car, like the one shown above, I happen to have a brand new one for sale real cheap!

LOL. Hard to believe you have to know where all that stuff goes back to....

I'd like to simplify it one day.

Thanks Rob. Luckily I live near a hose repair specialist (Pirtek), I'm sure they could fix me up somehow. It's a bummer you got stuck with that pipe.

Guess I will have to get that seperator from my OPC.
