Default New member/930 ignition

Hello to all out there, here goes my first post:

About a year ago I acquired a '78 930 In very good condition, 37,000 miles. Everything but the clutch was in good order and the motor pulls awesome. With the engine down to redo the clutch (everything we replaced seemed to be original to the car) we noticed a large crack in the distributor cap. The previous owner converted it to a twin point-arrangement back in the late 80's. It is Bosch and red in color. I've been told it is off a 1974-75 RSR. Does anyone know were I could find a replacement? The crack cannot be fixed reliably. A mechanic suggested going back to six plugs or changing to an electronic distributor. I'm in no big hurry since the car in running fine, but it could only be a matter of time before it surrenders on me. Since I'm new to the forum, attached is a picture of the beast: Petrol Blue 1978 930. Thanks for any help.

Welcome! You might try over in the "911 Tubo" section under "Turbo" to the left.

Hi:

From your description, it sounds like you have an RSR-spec, twin-plug distributor in your 930.

Those RSR caps are NOT cheap so be sure you're sitting down,......

That said, its a VERY good ignition and far better than the current crop of crank-triggered, distributor-less aftermarket ignitions.

If you need a cap, please contact me directly since I stock them.

Default Petrol Blue 930 1978

I too have a '78 Petrol Blue 930 and am wondering where I might find info on the production numbers for this car. I understand that 461 units of the '78 930 were produced but any idea as to how many were Petrol Blue with the Euro style plaid interior?

Your right in saying that 461 930's were produced as the '78 model; also 735 European versions were produced. I don't have production #'s by color, but you should post it as a separate thread. I'm sure the answer is out there. Cool color!

That's the cap only isn't it? How much more for the rotor?

I heard an entire RSR dist was like 10K or more, if you can get one.

I was cruising the Pelican engine parts the other day and saw my crank for 9K. I got a good laugh out of it anyway!

The RSR twin-plug rotor is around $ 585,....

Original Bosch RSR distributors (the ones with advance mechanisms) are almost impossible to find and can run anywhere from $6K on up.

Bosch stopped making the RSR caps & rotors a few years ago. Andial offers aftermarket replacements and they are well made.

If the heads did'nt have to be machined, I'd go twinplug. Too much work otherwise.
