Default Possible 86 930 purchase -questions

Hi all, I'm seeking advice & information regarding the possible purchase of an 86 930. This would be my 1st Porsche. I had been looking for 993's but recently came across this car that is not too far from me and plan to look at it in a few days.

I have some questions that hopefully you all can help answer! I have been rennlist quite a bit and now am searching the forums for some of this info, but any help would be appreciated.

The car in question: 86 930. Guards Red/Brown interior leather. 39900 miles, all original. Brake pads -CV joints replaced -at 29000 miles The clutch was replaced and valves adjusted. Rehose cam lines and Turbo feed line ; syncros 1 and 2 were replaced. Leakdown done at the time was 3%,3%,3%,3%,4%,3%

Are these leakdown results ok? I do plan to have a PPI if I decide to negotiate this car.

Owner states it is a euro spec. How does this affect value?

What in particular should I look for when I look at this car?

How about general tips/opinions on the way this car drives.. what to expect, etc?

Thank you very much in advance!

If you do a seach alot of your questions have been answered but....

1) Those leakdown nos are pretty damn excellent, but only if done on a warm engine with the throttle closed (which I am sure based on how low they are). GET a compression test too!!

2) Check for usual oil leaks

3) Drive the car, does it make good power? What does the boost gauge read, what does the oil pressure gauge read?

5) Euro Spec in my opinion does not affect value, alot of 930s over here are, you can verify if it is European Car as it will have "ZZZ" in he VIN, the US Spec cars have "WPO" in the vin. The European cars do not have all the emissions junk of the US cars too which is a bonus.

If you are mechanically inclined and have decent tools wrenching on the 930 is not all too bad really.

slownrusty,
Thanks for the info! Yes, I am searching the forums for specifics as well..

You mention to look for usual oil leaks..Are there specific places to look that are prone to leaking?

I will drive it and check the guages, though I am not sure what good power would be in a 930. It does have the ZZZ vin according to the owner. I consider myself rather mechanically inclined and don't have a problem working on something if I can.

Thanks again and I welcome any other thoughts.

A Euro car may have spent several years blasting down the autobahn, so the 40K miles may have been a lot harder than in the US. I wouldn't pay more than about $25K for this car.

125shifter:
Thanks for your thoughts. I do know it was registered here in the US in early 87. I am assuming it was new then, but will find out. Current owner has all records from 90 on. The car since and up to this year was serviced at Nine Lives Racing in Colorado, maybe someone is familiar with them?

Do others agree with this value?

get a CARFAX too, especially if you have a VIN. it's cheap and 'could' point out a few things... clear title, accidents, speedo accuracy, # previous owners, salvage, etc....

Just for your information a car that's done most of it's mileage on the motorway/autobahn would be a much better buy than a similar mileage car used round town.
Constant medium speed (a typical cruising speed on a French or German autobahn might be 90-110mph) would mean less wear on the engine, suspension, brakes etc than stop start driving.
Don't forget a high % of engine wear occurs on engine start-up so the longer a journey is, the less wear occurs per mile.
Contrary to popular (US) belief everyone with a 911 in Europe does not travel everywhere at 150mph!! (no more than 145 )
The only minus point with a car used mainly on Autobahns is a lot more stone chips, a minor point when compared to the above points.

Sameer: I have not driven it yet, but will soon and check for straightness.
Gino: Good idea, thanks..I do have some of this info based on the current owner. It does have a clear title, and 3 owners. The current owner has only had it a couple months.

Keep the comments coming!

Check to see if clutch disk has been updated from rubber center to spring. Ref below.

Guess'n it's probably in need of rotors, can always check thickness. The rears are the expensive SOB's -- $150 each.

If you really what to know value, find the latest Excellence that has the 930 pricing update. They do all type p-cars annually, different model each issue.

Be warned that adding hp to the 930 is an addiction that will eat all your spare money.

I have a special credit card just for mods and the bill comes to my office, so be prepared to get creative to tell your wife about all that extra income that hasn't been going into the bank.

Why would it be a Euro model? Weren't all the 86 and on the same spec?

stratman: I am not sure why it is a Euro-spec model. Possibly due to availability then? I also thought that '86 reintroduced the 930 into the US.

schnele: I will have to keep that idea alive for the future!

For those of you who have one of these cars with the 4-speed transmission, are there any positives or negatives about it?

I know alot of people believe the five speed to be better, but I have a four speed and I really like it. Around town either second or third is like an automatic, so I'm not shifting all the time.
