Thumbs down Newbie

I finally got my dream car 1982 Euro-specs 930, 110,000km recent engine overhaul, new brakes, shocks and mint black leather interior. Everything including the a/c works perfectly. I have had a 1988 951 for 5 years and have tuned it to my utmost satisfaction. So when I got into the 930 I was not that impressed with the overall performance. Sure it sounds and looks awesome, but a daily driver it is not. 2 points have come up while in the last few days.
It hot Tokyo traffic, a few times I floored it and the engine died, only to return after 2-3 mins. I noticed the front fuel pump was noisey that day aswell. Under normal driving no problem. Does this indicate I need a new fuel pump, relay or some sensor?
The next problem is an intermittent metalic crunch noise from the driveline whenever the car is rolling then the throttle is touched. It doesn't happen all the time but is most noticable at very slow speeds. I jacked it up and heard some noise from the transmission. With one wheel up a mechanic gave a preliminary assessment of failing driveshafts. Oddly this noise started after the right outer CV boot split. My question is it more likely a transmission issue or driveshaft issue?

I also have a 1979 SC, are the transmissions and driveshafts interchangable?

Any assistance on this will be greatly appreciated.

The only way to know if you have an ill fuel pump is to put an inline fuel pressure gauge and see what it records.

Hard for us to diganose the metallic driveline noise without physically being there. Its like calling a doctor up and asking him to diagnose a pain in your arm over the phone.

951 can be BRUTALLY fast, so I understand your disappointment. My bone stock 930 was quite a bit slower than my turbocharged AE86 (I am sure you know what that is, seeing that you are in Japan). But please know that an extra 100+ hp can be quickly coaxed by turbo and exhaust upgrades accordingly. These topics have detailed on this website and I have a full pictorial of my recent upgrades if you do a search under my username.

My 930 was transformed and when I say transformed, I mean "TRANSFORMED", its a totally different car and throttle response is crisp and impressive. Do these upgrades and go looking for Skylines and Supras.

Hope that helps - Yasin

Do these upgrades and go looking for the latest Ferraris. I did and it put a big smile on my face.

Thanks for the helpful information.
Since I just got this car, I don't know what noises are normal. I guess it won't hurt to change cv joints since they are the cheapest and probably will need to be done soon anyway. And change the transmission fluid. I also found a broken o-ring in the intercooler line. That should fix the weak boost.
A friend suggested I check my swaybar bushings.
Any further diaganostic hints for that driveline noise?
It already has a hi-flo muffler that sound awesome.

I had a lot of driveline noise before, changed all back to stock bushing and all ok. Just ordered a set of Polybronze bushings from Steve Weiner at Rennsport and will be putting them in soon. They help stifen up the ride and no noise.

I would get more acquanted with the car and its mechanicals. Sounds like you have no problem getting in there yourself. You may find little things needing service (such as your IC o-ring, axles), but bet you will soon be looking for performance upgrades. The engine cut-off sounds like a gremlin you will catch by looking, asking questions, touching, measuring.

BTW, what kind of oil cooling mods are you running.

Good luck.

I decided to follow my mechanics advice and order a set of cvjoints/driveshafts and a fuel pump. I am sure it won't hurt.I will also try a transmission fluid oil change. BTW it has LSD.
As far as cooling, it is all original, but I am planing on getting a front mounted oil cooler with fans.
