Getting Hot!
So recentely I discovered a potential overheating issue in my 930. When idling for periods of time or stuck in traffic in the city, the oil temp gauge would creep on me up to the second hash mark.
Bring the car in to my mechanic, they identify a faulty cooler/fan switch and replace it. Once the fan is starts working again, they discover that the thing is clearly on its last legs and runs out of steam after a very brief run. Now they are replacing the fan ($489 part).
My question(s) is this. I was at Putnam Park last weekend for a driving event when I noticed that towards the end of the second day the oil gauge was creeping beyond the second hash mark and making its way to red. Obviously I decided to run a few cool down laps and call it a day:
1. Am I wrong to think that the oil cooler fan (which wasn't working at the time) would only help me when the car is idling or in traffic (e.g. no airflow from the car being in motion)?
2. Shouldn't racing around a track provide enough air to the cooler to keep her cool?
3. Is it normal for the car to run a little warmer than normal in track situations (I would think so)?
4. Are stock 930 oil cooler setups sufficient for track events?
Thanks guys!!

NO, stock 930 oil cooler setups are not sufficient for the track in my opinion. When I drove my car on the track with the stock oil cooler, it simply couldn't keep up. I added a 2nd oil cooler up front with a new valence, and the temp dropped tremendously!

I bought a 934 style front end from TRE Motorsports, and I used a Setrab 172 for the cooler.

Brian,
Nice 934 style front, very aggresive.
Rob,
You would need an additional oil cooler, even if you dont track the car, it's a good investment. Surely the temps will rise significantly when your tracking it and it's advisable to go for a few slow laps to help cool it down. The fan will also surely help especially in traffic.

I was at VIR last November and had a piece of carbon fiber go into my right turn signal at about 100 mph( which is out for more cooling) and lodge into my factory oil cooler fan. It was on and now it doesn't work. As everyone says, it's very expensive so, I'm going with a cheaper fan from Summit, Jegs, or....
