Oil pump upgrade

Oil pump upgrade
How far is it possible/desirable to upgrade the oil pump in my '77 930? It seems to me that the pressure is low with the Carrera tensioners, and though I believe it's flow that's important, I'm guessing that the later pumps have better flow, too. Can I go as far forward as a 993 tt pump? Thanks in advance.

I will probably do the cam line hardware update regardless of what I do with the pump. I don't know for sure, but I thought that the Turbo motors had bigger piston squirters, so the demand for oil is higher in these motors. If I am right, this is why they upgraded the pump in later years.

the picture in the Wayne Dempsey book (modify and restore your 911 engine) shows pictures of the different pumps. the 930 looks to be the beefiest/ biggest.
Tom- I'll either bring it over, or you can review this when you come here... whichever!

My understanding was that the later 993 style oil pumps flow more oil than the 930 to accomodate the increased need for oil at the lifters and through the oil bridges. I had also read that the later model 993 pumps were highly prone to cracking over time. That's where my research stopped. I would like the high volume 993 pump...perhaps the 930 pump can be modified.

A 930 pump can move enough oil. This is an upgrade for the NA cars... they put in 930 pumps. Now i am not absolutely certain that the '77 930 pump is the same as the later ones... but it probably is. Just change the cam line hardware first. Cracking the case is a lot harder.

The 993TT uses the 964 oil pump, infact the 996TT uses the 964 oil pump... Like Glen said the best pump for the money is the 996 GT3R.. Basically it's a bolt in.. However, the best pump that money can buy is the GT1 oil pump that has 3 pickup for scavenge.... $4500.00

Thank you for the replies. I'd like to hear from brave souls who may have attempted these modifications. Not having an engine dyno and lab to test it thoroughly, I am only willing to do go where others have ventured, at least as far as my oil system is concerned!

I do the 996 Gt3R pump on every motor we have done, very easy. As Kevin said, basically bolt in just have to relieve the case a bit where the second scavenge is. Kevin stole a GT3 wing out from under me on Ebay once with like 3 seconds left, but I have forgiven him since he is sending me that GT1 pump...lol BTW Kevin is Your guy on Turbo mods but I am sure You guys knew this already!

Do the 996s run an aluminum gear on the intermediate shaft, like the 930s? I wonder whether the aluminum gear in a 930 can take the increased load from the big oil pumps. By the way, my Turbo 3.0 runs a normal 911 pump, not the familiar 930 style with the partial cast iron housing. Since I'm deep into this engine, anyway, (see my post on cylinder life) maybe I should just put in the later 930 pump. (I'm thinking of $$ here, too.) Anyone have a spare for sale?

Tom,
I upgraded to the 964 pump (~$1200 new ) when my 77 930 3.0L case was split. The problem with the later 3.3L 930 pump is its lack of pump shaft bearings and aniquated design. The 964 pump has the shaft bearings, it also scavenges at a rate that is greater than the 3.3L 930 pump (scavenging is what its all about with these high-heat producing turbos). You do have to modify your case for the 964 pump, but this is easily done by a knowledgable porsche machinist. I guess it all depends on what you're doing with the motor, if you're going to full race, then go for the best (a 996GT3R pump). But for the street car (w/ the occasional track day) I can't see spending all that money when the 964 pump is more than adequate for the job. My 0.02 cents
