Jim,
Please go ahead and install the K27 turbo. Why would your engine meltdown if your not over boosting. Keep the boost at or below 1 bar, turn up the CO between 3-4%, make sure you have good fuel, add a fuel enrichment or modify your WUR and make sure you have adequate cooling(additional oil cooler) and your all set to go. You'll be pretty safe at 1 bar with this setup.
It's been done and done by Porsche. Look at the 964 3.3 turbo S. It runs with a K27 7006 turbo, 0.9 bar of boost pressure. Now if Porsche car run with this setup, I dont see why you cant. Ater all Porsche does'nt just build quick cars but they build quick reliabl cars.

Jim - If your 95k mile engine is in good shape (compression, leakdown, oil pressure) I wouldn't worry at all, but I would keep the boost level stock. I'm going to put a K27 in my 140,000 mile engine next year when it's out of the car for the tensioner upgrade, SC cam install, and gearbox overhaul (3rd gear synchro is very weak), but I wouldn't run higher boost without at least an upgraded intercooler - even then I'm not sure I would do it. I want to find out just how long this engine will go before really needing an overhaul (as opposed to wanting to do it). Turbo replacement is an opportunistic thing, I'm not looking for big power. It just makes sense to do it given that it is original and will not last forever. The fact that it'll spool a bit quicker is a fringe benefit.

Richard-
on that K27... is that the 7200 or the HF?
I recently obtained a 7200 (for post Thanksgiving installation on my 98k stock 930) because it was my understanding that the HF model is for big HP/TQ motors with mods, as compared to those enthusiasts who just want smoother, quicker spool, more modern functioning Turbo compared to the 3LDZ.
I was concerned, like Jim, that too many mods on "older engines" will result in quicker, or sudden death. My plan was to do the Turbo and Header w/Heat (GHL), run with the stock muffler/cat for a while and see where that leaves me for State emission testing as Phase 1. Then, either go with the FabSpeed muffler alone, or bypass pipe w/ FS-muffler or gut the cat w/ FS-Muffler.

basket case 930
Hi gang,
~3 yrs ago, I bought my 77 930 as a basket case...no history on the motor/chassis (the eng was not in the car) and it's a Euro to boot! I would not recommend this route, although, it did force me to go down the rebuild/upgrade path a little sooner than anticipated. I did a top-end after the shop found a broken head stud and A MISSING ONE!!!...Previous owner may have been on crack. Got it back, drove it for 1500 mi, blew the #8 main O-ring seal. Did the bottom end, and that's when some internal mods started. 964 oil pump, everything balanced. Got it back together and have been driving it for ~ 4500 mi.
I drive it whenever I can, it's no garage queen. My odometer just turned 300,000 mi on Tuesday morning. I have put many hours and dollars into this car, and everyone of 'em worth it. As for the mods, (it was a bone-stock motor except the Carrera tensioners) Garrettson IC, K&N & housing, K27-7200, GHL headers & 3" dual out muffler, no smog equip, Web SC cams, stock spring (0.8bar max). I've taken it to 3 track events this year and hope to have more next year. Coil-overs/monoballs & 993TT brakes at all corners, a full cage, RSR (street) interior. Next up? relocate the battery to the smuggler's box, add another oil cooler (to the RSR front spoiler), maybe a 1.0 bar spring? Oh yeah, paint would be nice, too. It just never ends...........

I'll be seeking some advice but I believe that you are right - the HF will not be an appropriate choice for a mostly stock engine. With the GHL headers and the K27 yours should spool pretty quickly. I'm in Canada so my car has the factory headers (300 hp stock) so in terms of bang for the buck, I'm going with SC cams and leaving the exhaust alone. My car is mostly driven on the street so a bit better off-boost performance will be welcome. I'd like to keep is as stock as possible (or at least as stock looking as possible), while making prudent changes in normal maintenance, hence my decision to leave the boost where it is and go with the SC cams.

hi Richard,
I like to believe that my speedo is the original (because the body has been hammered!) But it's coming along nicely and it's not flexy at all on the track...(keeping in mind, a novice is driving )
Cheers!

Thanks all, for your words of encouragement. Last night I brought my 930 to a 930 fanatic to install my "modified" K-27, GHL headers & muffler & Imagine Auto air intake set-up. I can't wait to get her back!
BTW, my 930 has a very early oversized intercooler by "club carerra", has anybody heard of it? Jim

I guess everyone else will just have to take our words for it that a mille miglia is worth every penny.
