your gonna buy one, and your gonna do a great PPI on it, and then your gonna start to modify it and say to yourself I'm just gonna do a few bolt ons. then you say well since the intercoolers off might as well take the manifold off and have it extrude honed. then you say to yourself since the manifolds off might as well match port the injector blocks...Long story short your gonna end up rebuilding it into a monster. Been there built that. but my project got a kickstart when my baby dropped a valve 2 weeks into my ownership of her. I'd look for a solid, original chassis with a nice interior and a suspension that hasn't dry rotted out over the years from sitting in a doctors garage.(I've been there too)

Once you've ridden/drove a built 930 you won't want a stock one.

Pete,
I know exactly where your comming from and hell yeah I dont regret a single cent of it everytime I blast down the open road.

I do an oil change every 2000 miles, track my car 1-2 times a year. Every now and than a push to 6000revs on the streets. These cars need to be pushed hard every once in a while.

yeah pete i know what you're saying i probably will end up rebuilding half the engine with upgrades, but at least for now i'm not planning anything too serious. just a k27 turbo, headers, exhaust, intercooler, and some other basic bolt-ons.

See, thats how it always starts out. I predict that in 6 months your gonna be knee deep in a total rebuild.

Pete,
We share the same exhaust, Millemiglia. Sounds great. Yeah it's heavier than the B&B,Fabspeed but it sure does sound great. I did'nt want to go to the Ruf exhaust as it does'nt flow as well as the others do. My next exhaust will probably be either the Fabspeed or B&B.

I'm always amazed by the 2 year old town cars in NY with 300k miles on their original motors and suspensions... Miles and age seem to be about equally important it would seem. A friend of mine has a 30k 76 930, and recently dumped a ton into it because...well... stuff just gets old after a while...

Yeah Tom its true that a 930 needs more maintance that a regular 911. From my research before I purchased my 930, The car needs to be driven on a regular basis which alot of owners don't do. Also the heat generated by the turbo accelerates the wear.

Yeah it is heavier but awww maaannnnn the sound is sooo sweeeeetttt.
I think it just makes a b&b and ghl sound cheap and tinny. I always wanted to fab up a custom dual outlet straight pipe but I was always afraid I'd like it better then my $$$$ mille miglia. So I've put that idea on hold untill this muffler starts restricting HP.

Ken,

I have a 86 951 too, and always toy with the idea of getting a 930 or 993TT. My 951 is making lots of HP -- 350 or so to the wheels. I see you have both. Am I missing anything? --Tom

Thumbs up

Well Tom, when I first drove a 930 compared to my 951 it felt very ancient. After awhile I grew to appreciate the car. A 930 takes alot more driver involvement but the car a blast to drive. Plus the car is so sexy! I can't wait till I get all my upgraded turbo, headers, intercooler on. ken

Another data point for the original post - my 1982 had a top end overhaul at 200,000 km (=120,000 miles). Now have 228,000 km (=142,000 miles) and it still pulls like a runaway freight train, uses maybe 1 - 1.5 litres of oil between changes (at 5,000 km) and does not smoke at all (except for a little puff on startup if it's been sitting for a few days). Oil pressure is 4 - 4.5 at cold start, and is usually RPM/1000 + 1 (ie. 3 bar at 2,000 rpm) to just over 4 bar max when fully warm. Engine is completely stock. I know it will need a rebuild at some point but do not expect this for quite some time yet. My mechanic figured the engine was in better shape than 90% of the engines he'd senn with half (or less) the miles. It all comes down to how the car was driven and maintained over it's life - a good PPI will be a good start but there is an element of luck as well. IF the car / engine checks out well with the PPI, there's a good chance that it will continue to perform well. One more thing, my cars mileage to date has been with the original chain tensioners which will finally be changed in the spring at the next valve adjustment.

Now this thread has got me worried.
I just bought a complete GHL header/muffler set-up & I'm about to install it & a new K-27 onto my 95,000 miles 930. Sheeesh, I don't want the damn engine to melt down on me. Any advice here?
