Default Gearbox oil change w/ an LSD

Hey guys,

I am going to change the gearbox oil soon in my 1988 930 w/ 74,000 miles on the car. I plan to use Swepco 201, but want to know if I need to also add an LSD additive?

On the 930 gearbox, am I looking for a hex nut to fill like the 915 gearbox?

And is it on the driver or passenger side?

Thanks,

Blaine

On a 930 tranny. You need a 17mm hex stud for the bottum drain and a 19mm hex nut on the filler drain.

Swepco 201 is good enough and comes with the needed detergents. I would stay away from additional additives since you never know what reaction will take place on any particular brand.

And yes the 19mm hex is on the driver side.

Thanks estrellajon,

I have located a tool for the 17mm drain plug, but not the 19mm fill plug.

Any ideas where to buy?

any auto parts store or sears tools would sell those hex sockets individually.

I'm happy using the Swepco201 for the g/box.

I have been to both Ace Hardware and Schucks Auto Supply with zero luck on finding either removal tool. I even looked at Harbor freight.

Here's a quick bit of advice.... Always break loose the fill plug before draining the fluid. If the fill plug is frozen, you can address that problem while still able to drive the car (as you still have fluid). :-)

Flag down a Snap-On man or a Mac Tool man. They willl carry it. You can also order it online from either.

Also, I thought they were both 17mm.

2nd thought. Change your 17mm hex to a 17mm bolt when you can. It's a lot easier to work on.

YMMV.

You should be able to take off the fill plug with a regular wrench. The drain plug socket I bought from Pelican Parts. The fill plug should be a regular 19mm or 17mm hex socket. I used my craftsman sockets but I'm pretty sure it will come off with an adjustable wrench.

I don't know about the 930 trannys but the 965 with LSD needs an additive along with the swepco otherwise it makes a serious grinding noise when backing up or through slow turns.

OK.

This is exactly what I am wondering. Do I need the additive or not. So far, the consensus is no, that a Swepco 201 has LSD characteristics.

Anyone else have a firm opinion?

I'm giving this thread a BUMP! I'm planning on doing mine and need to know if I need an LSD additive. It looks as though the Swepco 201 is enough, but I want to be sure.

I use the swepco 201 on my race car with LSD with no additives and have no issues.
