Default what can I expect from a 30K 87'-88' turbo?

I think what I mean is could I get a decent one that I could drive for a year or two before I have to start thinking about engine work?
considering I'm looking at a higher milage example
any opinion would be helpful

You can definately get a nice turbo for $30K and not necessarily a high mileage.

The longevity of the engine is a function of how it was treated by previous owners. Unfortunately, the only way we can really judge the health of the engine is through a compression and leakdown test. This should be part of your normal pre-purchase inspection that must be done when buying a turbo. Also ask for receipts for any and all work done to the car - that will give you some idea of how well previous owners maintained the car.

I am sure others will disagree, but I think it is a buyer's market for turbos in the model years 1987 - 1988. If you can tolerate the 4 speed, that makes them a great bang for the buck.

I have 70K miles on my turbo and it is not the engine that will cost me money in the future. This is about the point at which clutch, shocks, seals, and some electrical components start to wear out.

I love the 930 4spd! Total old school man. Like Adidas Superstars and Zubaz pants. Drop it in fourth at about 45mph and ride it for another 100. The 4spd is quite notchy and bulky to row, but its pretty much a racing gearbox in a production car. Completely different from the 911 NA 4spds. It feels like its unbreakable. Feels anyway.

Bought my 53k mile 87 930 or $30k last fall. Car had a perfect PPI. It also had some nice modifications (clutch, suspension). You can definitely get a nice example for that price. Not concours condition, but better than you think.
