Default pistons - weight and size classes

hello

On the 930 Porsche use weight classes from 1980 and on for the pistons. What did they use before 1980?

Also pistons are stamped 0,1,2 etc for it's size class. can i have different size classes in the same engine (of course the cylinder will be matched with its piston)

I am asking because i have 5 good cylinders and pistons and found a second hand one, good as well, but it has a different size class. Mine are 0 the one i found is 2. Also the engine is 1978 and it doesn't say anything about weight classes before 1980. So would i be able to fit a post 1980 piston to a 1978 engine?

Rather technical i hope i don't bore you to death!

Thanks for a great forum i'd be dead without it!

Irover,
You will need to send all the pistons out to have them wieghted and matched. I would do this even if I found the same weight group. Nothing is worse than a 930 that sounds like a dish washer.

The sizes are different.

0: Cylinder 97.000-97.007 Piston 96.850
96.860

1: 97.007-97.014 96.857
96.867

2: 97.014-97.021 96.864
96.874

3: 97.021-97.028 96.871
96.881

I second that, weight class or not, I would have all of the pistons going into any motor balanced in weight, if you are going to do it, do it right.

So as long as they all weigh the same i can mix the sizes as i want, like five 0's and one 2? I also keep the cylinder height class the same of course.

cheers,
Peter

Correct. As long as they are all the same weight, height and have the matching cylinder you will be fine.
