Default Yet more questions - this time about turbo/muffler temps

How hot should it get in the area of the turbo and muffler? My '77 gets REALLY HOT. Like enough to have lifted the PVC and paint in the rear left of the engine bay, lifted some of the gel coat off the inside of the rear lid and burned some of the paint off the lower valence (below the bumper). My air injection is still hooked up. Will I see a noticeable drop in turbo and muffler temperatures if I disconnect it? I also noticed that part of the engine perimeter seal, at the rear near the muffler, is gone. This lets a lot of muffler/turbo heat into the engine bay.

More generally, what do people do to keep it cooler back there? I mean, it's February and cold, so this has got to be a problem in the summer.

P.S. My thermal reactors are gone. The car has thermal reactor replacement pipes instead. Also, my oil temperature seems normal at 180 to 190 F.

Not sure about the smog stuff but you can put a turbo blanket on. I posted this a week ago showing the install. Let me know if your interested.

Mine has gotten hot enough to melt the backside of the left bumperette.

Some 930's have a heat sheild between the turbo and the bumper at the top. Mine doesn't.

I could use a heatshield on the bumper too. Anyone have a design or favoured materials to build one of these? Like the look of the turbo blanket but most of my heat seems to come from the muffler itself (original but with twin outlets and redesigned internals, looks like the Ruf offering but a 10th of the price). Any help appreciated.

Have you checked back pressure in the muffler? Sounds obvious, but have you checked for any exhaust leaks?

I had an aftermarket muffler that didn't flow all that well and it produced some serious heat like that. I replaced it pretty quick. You might also want to check that you aren't running lean.
