Default Anyone here own a 944 Turbo as well?

I already have a 944 Turbo and love it. Since I can't seem to get enough of Porsches with boost, I'm starting to look at 930s. Does anyone here have both a 944 Turbo and a 930 and if so would you care to do a little comparing between the two in terms or power, handling, ride, fun factor... Or if you've driven a 944 Turbo recently and wouldn't mind commenting, I'll take those as well.

Thanks in advance,

I own both cars a Euro MY83 930 and couple of 951s.

Nothing compares to the 930 in looks. It's "art" on wheels.. Sitting in the 930 makes you feel good. In stock form the 930 has lots of turbo lag, not very comfortable, just "raw". The 930 has plenty of character. The 930 hold its value and status.

the 951 is a more modern and more comfortable car. It's a car you can drive daily, in traffic and hot weather. The AC works well, and it's fairly comfortable. The 951 is easier to drive at the limits, very forgiving.

Both cars can be modified for more HP.. The 930 is more expensive to modify, big HP can be obtained from the 951 for not much money (in comparison).

There is a similar discussion on the 944T forum...

I owned an '89 951, which was a great car for an everyday driver - fast with decent creature comforts. I traded it in when I bought another car in '02, but wish I had kept it..

I have ridden in the 79 930 that Brian Buxton had for some time with few mods done to it and OMG. There is that lag for a moment and then BOOM that car would take off. It was an amazing car to ride around in. Like they have said, very visceral, much more raw. I drove an 86 930 a while after that and it was very similar. The floor mounted pedals take a bit of getting used to and even more than in my 951, you get looks in that low slung beastie....it's what the average person thinks of when you say "Porsche".

That said, I have a 951 now as it's what I could afford and I needed another car. Down the road I see a 930 in my garage as well

sold my 951 to buy the 930... I'm not saying I regret doing it, but there is a big difference between the two vehicles.

The 951 with a few modest, low cost mods is quite nice, refined, even comfortable, perhaps modern (1988), especially for me compared to my habit of that 70's thing. But, on the other hand is the raw delayed power thump of the 930. It's kinda addictive. The problem is accessibility and money. Stock ain't bad, but mods are VERY expensive and constantly calling from the garage for attention.

With the cost of another '88 951, I could have a new turbo, intercooler, cams, complete exhaust and so on for my 930 and have 385rwhp!

I think my wife would say "Sure, buy me the 951!!!!"

Yeah, I've got one each - both '86's.
I think they are the best of both worlds.
The 930 is "quirky". Has some weird ergos, A/C is weak, etc. I agree with everything fast951 said. Jumping from one to the other, it's hard to beleive they are built by the same company.

The 930 is my favorite, but I drive them both abt the same amount depending on the weather and my mood. It is defintely a "super car". As soon as you get in - it just feels special. Even by today's standards, it's a kick in the pants and addictive.

One thing abt driving the 930 - EVERYBODY looks. Even school kids that were born long after the car was out of production. It has a look that cannot be ignored. If you don't like being stared at and pointed at - don't get a 930.

I have both. They compliment one another so well. Anyone who says a 951 is one bit less of a Porsche than a 930 is just in denial. Stock for stock, the 951 might even be the better overall car.

I love the 930 because of the looks. Its artwork on wheels. Talk about a chick magnet. It even looks fast. Its definitely quirky as someone said. Ergonomics are a joke. Half the buttons you cant even see. Cant imagine driving it daily. Its also a car you cant park anywhere as it says "rip me off". Drives like a dragster though. The turbo lag, then whooooooosh.

The 951 to me is the embodiment of striking a perfect balance. Fast, great handler, liveable, driveable in traffic, you can park it just about anywhere, draws some attention, but not enough to draw crowds. Personally I think the 951 looks is as timeless as the 930. Look at any modern 2dr GT hatchback after the late 70s and they have 924-944-951 written all over it. And hey, if the A/C is in good shape, its great. Even a great 930 A/C still stinks.

Cant imagine having one without the other. I had the 951 first, thought about selling it to get the 930. Once I got the 930 and drove it for a couple weeks I knew even more just how wonderful the 951 was and how stupidly easy it was to drive it like you were a professional.

Well, I have both a 1980 930 and 2 1986 951's. I love them both but have the 930 up for sale. I love the look of the 930 and this is the first of the super cars. It is a "****-aim-fire" car with acceleration that is hard to believe. I fixed the AC issue with 3 condensers. However, the car is a racecar that has been converted to be street legal. It acts and drives like a tamed racecar. It is louder than the 951, has a harsher ride and you can tell it was made for speed.

I love both of the car types but have settled on the 951 as my daily driver.

I had both. The 951 first, then purchased a 1988 930. Kept the 930 after having an engine upgrade., and the 951 engine failure. At the time there was way more options (good) available to hot rod a 930 than the 951. The 951 world was sadly neglected. I wish I had of kept the 951 now also. There are many more good parts available now for the 951, with new vendors now becoming interested in these cars. I still love the 930, just wish mine was a 5 speed. The one thing it lacks is the shorter splits between gears. I was the person who converted over to EFI and retained the 930 intake manifold. My goal was to get better throttle respnse, an incresae in useable torque, and hopefully around 450 HP. All goals were acheived. The difference in throttle response is purely amazing. The engine reacts so much quicker, very crisp and results in way quicker turbo response. I have not driven a 951 with EFI, but I understand kits are now available, (see the 944Turbo board) and these cars are now getting the same results. Life is good.

It was his black one....I heard later that he sold it as he got an offer he couldn't refuse.

Yes, I've known and talked to him off and on for several years....he really knows his cars. I think I first met him on the old Porschelist 928 list. Kewl guy who got a great chance to make his money enjoying what he loves...cars.

I had a BUNCH of pics of that black car at one time, not sure if I still do or not, but I'm pretty sure I do.
