Default Opinions on 1989 930

I'm thinking about buying a 1989 930 Cab. with 14K miles. I would greatly appreciate opinions from owners of the same (or coupe's, of course). I know the 87-89 is a good year because of the G50 trans, but I really don't know any specific areas of concern with this car. For example, 993's commonly have the CEL and carbon buildup issue, then there's the clutch slave cylinders that go bad, etc. . .

What are the issues with this car that I should look for?

All comments are welcomed and appreciated . . . Happy Thanksgiving too!!!

Hi Tom,
There are no real issues like the 993 CEL. I run the Malibu Canyons with a bunch of Rennlist 993 guys(you should join us!) After our run we eat breakfast and a main topic of discussion will be CEL/wire harness/idle stabilization etc.. problems(issues). I feel guilty because I never really have any issues! I think that the G50 really is the way to go. I drive mine everyday, the G50 box is so tight and feels just great. If I had any complaints it is with the suspension. It is very soft for a car with such abilities. But depending on your preferences, everything is available to upgrade these cars in small stages to your liking. If the price is right and/or you like this car...Go for it. I would have paid more for my car if I had to. This is the ultimate model for these turbos.

BTW, 89 is the only year for the G50/50 930.

Hey Mike,

I remember your car . . . I was on one of those malibu runs too. Lots of fun. I didn't know your cab was an 89 too. I remember 'cause Max snapped some great pic's of your car.

Thanks for the info.

Hi Tom! Those runs are fun!....but they would be unbearable in a 4spd turbo. As it is I'm working to dial my car in for canyon running. I just installed 22/31 hollow torsions and will be replacing my current K27 with a quickerspool K27-7200(the same K27 used on the C2 turbos) and untimately headers and new roll bars. Bill is right, '89 was the only year for the G50/50. Luckily, of the 1000 or so '89s, many seem to have ended up here in the states and in California in particular. I regularly see them for sale in Panorama. Hope to see you on a future run. Happy Thanksgiving

Tom, Don't forget about the other 7 year models that you have to chose from. There are some great deals out there especially on the early cars. Very little changed from 78 to 89. Most notably I think 86 got power seats and a catalytic converter and also for the US all cars after 79 got the less desirable non euro fuel system. A big plus in buying a 78 or 79. Besides small changes like antennas and head light washer nozzles the only other big change was is 89 where the 930 got a 5spd tranny and a hydraulic clutch. As far as the 5spd tranny goes I think its a good transmission and it might have a slight advantage over a (stock) 4spd in a race application but as far as normal street use I prefer the 4spd. I personally like the tall gears and the ability to nearly hit 100mph in 2nd gear. I think the tranny really gives the car a old race car feal. Keep in mind I don't drive my car everyday and rarely in stop and go traffic. If that was the application for the car I'd probably pic some type of Carrera. Or if your looking for a more refined single turbo car maybe look the 91 or 92 C2 Turbos or even a 94 3.6 which is a personal favorite of mine. Well I just thought I'd give you something else to knaw on besides and old turkey leg! p.s. i'm sure you 89 owners will beat me on the 5spd, thats just my opinion.

Eric
