My sanction body says that if not connected directly to a "frame" member, that it should measure 6 x 6 inches at .125 thick. I would think that is plenty strong and in many circumstances unable to fully implement. This applies only to the required safety bars and not to reinforcing and suspension pickup points.
Which sanctioning body are you trying to run in might be helpful and may generate more responses. LOL
