Paint Touchups
I had some touchup work done to my Porsche. The guy I had do it does really awesome work and does not quit until both you and he are satisfied with the work done. He painted the door handles, the targa top, the wiper frame and some of the window trim too. It was not too expensive either. If you need any type of paint touchups including rock chip repairs and live in Southern California I would be happy to recommend him to you just let me know. He can match your paint color by eye and you honestly may not be able to tell the difference.

He painted by bro's BMW bumper with an exact color match as the rest of the car. Mixed with no computer extras, he just picked the right colors and it was perfect. If I purchase a whale tail, I will probably have it color matched by him to the rest of my 911. Here is a pic of the paint work in progress.

I think what may happen on an older car (like mine) is that the original paint no longer matches the paint code. I have wet sanded parts of the top of the hood and the color does not match newly computer code mixed paint, but it does match on the underside of the hood. The side surfaces match much better.

Ah, ok - I guess with paint-fade, the code may be of limited value. But I think there are machines that analyse the paint colour and produce a current code? I would expect that to be more accurate than even the most skilled eye.

I agree that red is the worst color for fading, it used to contain gold as one of the colorants, but that was a 15 years ago. As far as color matching, there are computers that can do it but I imagine that a skilled artist is just as effective. You may have to take a half dozen samples to the computer and label them to the exact location on the car because the fading will not be uniform. The color machines are big and the from the ones that I have seen you have remove a chip of paint and put it in them, you may cause more damage peeling paint chips from your baby than hiring the artist.

He does do small rock chips but I was lucky not to need any of these repairs on my Porsche. He also specializes in exterior detailing. If I get a chance tonight - I will put his card up here for you. I honestly would rather trust someone that takes pride in his work and appreciates a car than an trained machine that can do more damage than good.
