Default Does Your Shop Have Insurance?

Three questions we never ask:

Who is responsible for damage, or theft, while my car is being restored?

What sort of insurance does this restoration shop have to protect me against financial loss?

What type of insurance should I have on my car while it’s in the shop being restored?

Here's my whole column.

My car has never seen a shop so I don't think about it much , but I always assumed my own insurance would pick up the tab in an incident like this.

For my track car, I have STP insurance; storage (while in shop), transport (while being transported to and from track) and paddock while at the track....but not on track. Street 964 car insurance covers any damage less deductible.

I would not rely upon anything other than my own policy. There's too much uncertainty concerning the shop owner's insurance; for example, if his insurance is void if he sets the fire himself. If I were to take my cars to a shop, I might re-read my Hagerty policy first, to make sure.

I suppose some forego insurance on a car not on the road. There are still risks, so this is not a good idea for those not prepared to suffer the consequences.

you should have your own policy on your car.
most shops have a basic form of insurance.

I believe the insurance any company needs ( dry cleaners, Repair shop etc) is called Baile insurance. It insures the items of others while in their possession. My guess is most repair shops do not have sufficient insurance to cover the value of our vehicles.
