Odometer problems.
Hi all,
1000 miles into my ownership and the odometer & trip start playing up. Both will run for up to a maximum (so far) of 60 miles and then stop recording.
If I reset the trip to 0, sometimes it will start working again. Other times, it only starts working after stopping the car, powering down and restarting.
Could it be the sender? If so, where is it on the 911?
BTW, the speedo works all the time.

It sounds like the odometer gear might be failing. I pushed the trip to zero and my odometer and trip stopped running altogether and have not moved since. I still have to send it to a repair shop.
Odometer and tripmeter failure is usually caused by one thing.....pushing the trip reset **** *while the car is moving*. Don't do it, ever!
Send your unit to N. Hollywood Speedometer for repair.

Some people have fixed the gears themselves. I think the parts are available at www.odometergears.com.
Guys,
I make the gears for both Euro and us cars. All I need to know is the year. They are on WWW.KLAINDUSTRIES.net I make mine out of glass impregnated nylon and also out of polucarbonite.

Ken,
My problem is a random one, i.e. It usually works for the start of the journey but stops after anywhere between 30 - 50 miles. Carry on driving and it might start again.
I did a 300 mile round trip today, the odometer read for the first 32 miles then stopped. At about 100 miles, it started to read again until 74 miles and stopped againand that was it.
I reset the trip with the car shut down at 150 miles. On the return journey, the odometer/trip didn't read until the last 10 miles.
Would this be gears...a had a similar problem with my 928 which turned out to be a bad connector to the sender on the gearbox.

Hi Jon, sometimes the odometer gear, if it is a metal one, instead of breaking, it can come loose on the shat. Generally, this happens to the metal type gears, the plastic ones usually just get ground up. You can go inside to determine what is what. Just takes time to do, thave to pry off the bezel, if it is the metal type gear, you can either epoxy it in place on the shaft, or try to peen (stake) it back in place. BTW, did you get your window switch working?
Hi,
I'll pull the speedo this weekend....I also have a set of yellow overlays for the instrument faces....dare I?
Have not yet fixed the window switch, the 928 is at a photoshoot for one of the UK classic car mags tomorrow so i've had to turn my attention there this week.
The 911 will be featured in a future issue. Fame at last!

hI everyone,
I had a similar problem with my 84 cab... after taking the speedo apart, i fuond the primary gear [light plastic] just fell apart to the touch. Well after that I fuona a man by the name of Jacob from Speedometer Plus in L.A. Calif. He described how to take off the speedo needle...but I "GORILLA'D IT" and made it into a kit... I then sent him the whole thing and he repaired it for about 180.00 U.S. ...The turn-around time was a week and it's been in and working great ever since...
About changing the faces on the meters...be VERY careful when removing the needles. Some come off easier than others!
If your speedo works when it feels like it ,I would look into the electrical end of the system before I ripped the speedo itself apart. A bad ground or loosely secured connector would give the on again off again symptoms that some of you are talking about.
Hope this helps.
