Question Short Shift Kit for 86 911

I recently purchased a 86 911 for my wife. She is constantly complaining that she has to reach too far when shifting. I was wondering if anyone has any advice on which short shift kit is the best.
Thanks

Scott,

Be aware that while a short shift kit will reduce the stretch required to move the shift lever, it will increase the strength needed to move it. Unfortunately there's no free lunch here. The shorter shift works because it changes the lever point. It's not much, but it may be noticeable. As I recall, on the Carrera, the factory kit will give you roughly 10% shorter shift distances. The factory kit is easy to install, maybe an hour or two.

My wife is 5'5" and has no issue with shifting the stock 915 (she has not had the oppportunity to drive a P-car with a G50 though). In fact, after she drives the car, she wants to keep driving it day after day after day.....

I'm thinking of getting her her own...

My wife isn't that hot on this transmission either, so maybe down the road I will just switch to a newer model transmission if the current requires a rebuild.

I'll agree on the factory short shift, I put in the Weltmeister and never liked it. Factory kit is easy to install and works great.

Any idea why the M241 Factory kit is only listed for '74-'86? Will it work on earlier 915's?

tlubbert,
Just switching to a more modern transmission is not as easy as it sounds. The G-50 is not a simple bolt on. The G-50 is bigger and heavier. You must make modifications and I believe it will be expensive when all is said and done. If you're not happy with the car because of the tranny, I would sell the car and look for an '87 - '89. If it is simply the lenght of the throw to 1st, 3rd and 5th, and you love the car, I would learn to live with it. A rebuild including a new clutch should run around $2.5 - $3K.

Good luck!

I didn't particularly like the long throw of my stock shifter either. One day, it gave out. There is an epoxy joint in the sifter lever and mine broke. At that time, the Weltmeister was popular so I installed it. It was a simple bolt on operation.

Contrary to what some others have experienced, I like the improvement in shift pattern and placement of the shifter for my driving position. I haven't tried the other short shift kits, but I am happy with the Weltmeister. It is not gated and won't do what some of the more expensive options will, but it will shorten the throw and make your tranny feel more sporty.

Hi Hetmann,
Thank you for the feed back on this issue. I have been investigating all possibile solutions to this problem and have decided to go with the factory short shift kit. I would like to drive cars that are equiped with each and compare the differences. Thanks again for you advice.
