pricing for 1972 Targa

Hi, this is my first post here. Hope this is the correct forum for this.
I'm looking at buying a Porche for my dad to tinker with. He is not collector so he isn't looking for everything to be original, he used to race, so he cares more about the drive than the body. I have a found one in Canada I'm considering but I have not idea what would be a reasonable price to pay for it and can't ask my dad or he will suspect what I'm up to.
The owner has passed away and it is their family selling now. They sent me these details:
1972 red Porche 911 Targa
2.5 liter high compression motor
Dual 6 barrel carb (have to confirm if it is a Dellorto or Weber)
Electronic ignition
Ported and polished cylinder heads
Momo steering wheel
5 speed manual transmission
custom rear speaker box enclosure
racing tires & rims (likely need to be replaced)
needs batteries
slight oil leak from motor from sitting
bumper damage (happened while parked in storage)
rust starting by rear fender lip
starts and runs without problems when powered
I know that probably isn't enough info but a price range would be very helpful to me. Or what else should I be asking about?
If this is not the right place to get this info, sorry for wasting the space.
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like it was someone's hot rod. You are going to need lots and lots of photos. Non-original cars don't demand the premium that original or restored cars do. And if it really is a well built hot rod your dad is going to have the perfect car to tinker with. Get all the pictures you can get your hands on....and find out what they want for it. And for heaven's sake don't post any clues as to where it is as it could get poached right out from under you.

Let's call this a T and it might be a #3 condition. Might be. ![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
I'm going to say $30,000 will give you a starting point. It could go as high as $50,000 or as low as $25,000.
You can be sure it's rusted. Figure at least $10,000 in rust repairs. Hey, it's a Targa. They're the worst.

Local restorer Willhoit says it could cost $200,000 plus metal work to restore an old Porsche. Also says the least expensive way to restore an old Porsche is to start with a great car that doesn't need restoration.

sounds like a great car, IF it is rust-free
you need to have a mechanic that knows old 911s (not just "Porsheys") to evaluate it
the $50k est. above is low, and it might go for $70k or a lot less as you never know
don't let anyone else know where it is as it might get sold out from under you
