Default Pewter M491

I was seriously considering this car late last year. It looks like a really nice car. I got scared off because I couldn't tell (from previous BaT auction comments) if passing emissions in CA would be an issue. Looks like it did some track duty....not a huge issue. Good to see it sold and going to a new home

For the record, I didn't acquire it. I like playing in the late model end of the M491 pond. Agree on the color, it's terrific. I repainted my silver 914 2.0 that same color in the late '80s...

My cousin's first car was a '70 T repainted in Zinn...

I'd like to have an M491 hot rod and a stock(ish) M491. That'd suit my needs just fine. 😎

I'm afraid of what this is going to go for!

It'll be a high water mark for sure. G50 M491 coupes more often trade hands privately. Reach out to me if you're considering bidding.

I fear it ends up to close to 930 territory. Money aside I wonder the difference in a 930 vs a NA of G50 in terms of overall driving experience and fun.

I'm about as M491 obsessed as they come. Personally, absent some windfall of FU money, I'm willing to spend up to 930 money on an M491, but that's just me. Even I can't rationalize paying more than 930 money for a 491, but hey... the heart wants what the heart wants. M491s are rarer than 930s by quite a bit. But 930s are iconic and perhaps the first "supercar." In terms of overall driving experience, everyone will have their preferences. I might prefer to take a four speed 930 on a cross country run, an '89 five speed 930 on this run...

...and a 491 for things like this

It's all about the right tool for the job.

That pretty much answers my question. We don't really have much of the second picture up here in Canada....At least not in Ontario.

Just got this beauty. First air-cooled car. '85 M491 Cabrio. Guards Red with Grey-Green interior. Learning the quirkiness of the 915 transmission.

Frank, your BaT cabrio was gorgeous. I lost the last bid for it. I think the buyer got a great deal. It inspired me though to get the next M491 cabrio I could find.

Red on Grey-Green?! I don't believe I've ever seen such a thing! How cool is that. Please post some pics of the interior.

Thank you. 🙌🏼 I appreciate it. Best of luck with your new toy.

I dropped almost 15 pounds off the rear with a bumperette delete and Euro crush tube swap...

Also, got a new license plate.

Introducing "Vents," number ten of fifteen M491 factory widebodies, and, as a subset thereof, the third of five M470 spoiler delete coupes delivered to North America during the final model year of G Body production. It is Grand Prix White on Burgundy, with 135k miles. The car is heavily optioned, including, among other things, full power heated seats, LSD, color keyed Fuchs and Special Wishes rear fender air intake ducts (a.k.a. "Vents").At some point in the past thirty-two years, the car sprouted a tea-tray tail (with an aftermarket base) and a 930 rubber front lip spoiler. Here's a shot of the car as it will eventually look, with the tail edited out...

I picked it up near Seattle last Friday and drove it home, via a few way points, 1,400+ miles over a few days.

It's a project for sure. It'll eventually need a bare metal respray and the interior redone.
