Oil level gyration

jet911, That gurgling, sloshing sound may be the thermostat not being completely closed when below it's opening set-point temperature, hence the sound "that goes away" when the engine reaches operating temp because the restriction is relieved. I've heard that sound as well until I replaced my thermostat. Hope this helps. I too am a backyard wrench, and I will continue to ask silly questions as these gentlemen have been patient, courtious, and helpful in the past. Thanks for the suggestion. Out of all the replies, you addressed my main concern - thanks! I got my car back last night and have not had a chance to take her out yet. I plan on taking a drive this afternoon, to see if the wrench did what he told me he would do, i.e., empty out the oil and replace to correct level. I doubt he did it. Have a great weekend!

Jim

I have had a similar experience with my oil level. After changing it about 400miles ago (added 10.5 qts) the level has been constant in the midrange of the dip stick with the engine warm, (I check it almost every time that I return home) Yesterday while driving I noticed the gauge was indicating at the top of the scale, sure enough when I checked the level it was at the top of the mark on the dipstick? How can this happen?

Hi,
Regarding the slushing oil sound when cold. I hear it alot in my car especially when cold and it goes away when warmed up. I've also noticed that it was louder when outside temps were colder.
I think it's just that when the car is parked for a while, some oil drains back from the oil tank to the engine. When you start the car afterwards, the oil gets pumped from the engine and goes to the tank. The oil is also thicker with more oil pressure so it's probably all of that making the gurgling and slushing sound. Migh also be a change in brand of oil filter making that you here it more?

Thanks for the note... I did in fact change to a different brand of oil filter as it was a Saturday when I did the oil change and the only place open that had one in stock was Auto Zone - a Fram Filter. I have since stopped by the Porsche Dealer and picked up two spare Porsche Filters and 4 plug gaskets as not to have that happen again. I'll be changing the oil out in a couple of months and will re-install the Porsche filter at that time (about 1000 miles since oil change in fall). Will advise if noise goes away!

Jim,
I will not try to explain the 8-12 quart oil trick, but as for the sloshing sound when warm, it should just be the oil as it's pumped through the lines to the front of the car.
