The alternator housing that shrouds the fan blades on by 1980 911SC cracked so I got a replacement used. The depth of the flange for the alternator is different even though the part number is the same. PET says that happened between the 79 and 80 model years. So, which has the thinner recess and which has the deeper one? I am trying to match an alternator to the new shroud, which appears to have housed an alternator that may have been shorter, or at the least had longer bolts to get through the flange.
Help?!

Just completing the engine rebuild and this is the final step before I can put it back in the car.

Can anyone tell me what alternator goes with the housing with the shallow flange? My alternator bolts won't go through the housing with the shallow flange, and the original had a deeper recess for the alternator. Sadly the original is a no go. Too many cracks.

If you can post a link to a pic, that would help. Simply not understanding what you're saying.

The older housings have to be machined to accept the higher output alternators.
