Well, I'm not finding anything on Google right now. I do know that I wouldn't do business with anyone named Roy in Bell, Bell Gardens, or Cudahy, CA. LOLzzzz....

Just wanted to mention that I did do a compression and leak down test earlier this year. I don't have all the numbers with me but everything was pretty good the only thing was cylinder #6 was not great and I also fouled a plug there. That was the only plug I have ever fouled, and this was the beginning of this year. I was going to do another leak down and compression test in the next couple of days.

When you do the leak down find out WHERE it is leaking. And no, unless something indicates it is needed, I would not do a bottom end "just because" that's easily a 2x-3x bill from a top end.

Another local shop is Sleepers Speed Shop in Costa Mesa, BBI in Huntington Beach.

yeah fouling plugs is the beginning of the end unfortunately .. that means there is so much oil in there it cant be burnt off and if going to make a mess of valves, plugs etc. If it fouls repeatedly and you start getting misses .. its time ..

Just did a PPI on a 95k mile 3.2 car that had a 20% and 70% cylinder. Was quoted $6500 for the top end rebuild and 2k more for the clutch and "while we're in there" stuff for the full tune. 8-8500 all in.
Off topic, but Would y'all do the syncros or any g50 work while you're in there?

$8500 includes labor? That is dirt cheap if so.

That's all parts and labor. Agreed a good deal overall, but they are in CT. Having work done there before shipping to CA just for this reason.
Seems like a very reputable and respected specialist.

I have a 1986 911, that is currently burning about 600 miles per quart. I drive the car 3 to 4 times a week about a 150 miles each time. The strange thing is on open road it consumes about a quart every 700 miles and about a quart every 600 miles in traffic in Los Angeles. I started to look at doing a top end rebuild and I am trying to see how much I should spend on one. Based on the cost of parts and machine costs I am guessing is should be around $5-6k to get a basic to-end done and increasing from there depending on each engines needs.

But I have looked at a bunch of places that are well known in my area, from Tre, redline, and more. Each one is asking for $8-12k to do a top end and replace my valve guides. One place told me it would be $5k and then when I was going to do it switched to $8k before they even started. Most of the places have are going to need the car for 1-3 months.

What should a top end cost? Does any one have a recommendation for reputable place that is not going to over charge.

Thank you for ny help and advise.
Kishme79,

Where are you located in LA? would love to chat about your build perhaps offer some more insight. the job is, and should be very transparent. although it might be difficult to quote precisely down to the penny but it's also about the confidence the person or place going to do the work. feel free to reach out to us anytime.

If you're planning on a top end, it won't be cheap for a good job. And trust me, you will spend lots extra on "while the engine is out, might as well....." stuff.

Plan on $12K-$15K. Maybe more, maybe less, depending on what else you decide to do, or not do.

Good luck
