Question leak from between cylinder and crankcase?

has anyone heard of a leak suddenly appearing from between a cylinder and the crankcase? I have an 87 930 w/ 78k miles, and according to my mechanic, this might be the case.

Could be a broken head stud....
What cylinder is Leaking ??

If it is #6 it could be coming from the top of the engine. Leaky oil thermostat or oil sender...

My guess is that one or several studs broke. I've never heard of pulling a stud in the non mag cases.

I have read that corrosion can cause this to occur on some of the Dilavars, particularly in climates where salt is present.

My 3.0 came from an '83 Cab donor located in Canada. About a year after the transplant, I heard a compression leak under acceleration that made my engine sound like a popcorn machine.....broken stud.

I replaced all 24 studs with factory 993 studs. Make sure replace all 24, and use a competent P mechanic. Replacing studs is not for the faint of heart, especially removing them, which requires torch heating the case to break the loctited stud threads.

Nope. Not the head studs. Mechanic just pulled the valve cover gasket, and the head studs are intact - torqued down to specs. Will continue to look for the leak.

3.0 exhaust studs do break. I just pulled an engine with 2 broken studs. I have heard of several others.
