Post Loose Side mirrors

Hi, anyone know how to fix a loose side mirror. I currently have the door panel off so whether this is a good time to fix the mirror or not i am not sure. Incase it matters 77 Carrera 3.0 WOR.

Thanks in advance.

If you have flag style mirrors: remove mirror from door by loosening(not removing!) the allen bolt that secures the mirror base to the door. Then look under the base to see the wiring(if power mirrors) going through a notched, round ring. It's been awhile, but I just used needle nose pliers to grasp that ring and turned it to tighten. I can't remember if it was a right hand thread or left, but I do remember it was spring loaded. My mirror actually became disconnected from the base because the ring had worked its' way off the threads (stripped the first couple of threads), so I cut out one of the cone washers under the ring so I could reach the threads with the ring. Worked perfectly and i didn't have to purchase a new mirror.

Baum tools makes a screw driver tool that has the exact fit for the screw holding the top part of the mirror. www.baumtools.com

Druck, you're right, but it's hard to fit the tool with the wiring harness going through that bolt.

R22Tech has one of the "tricks" of the trade, I've been there, used that one.

Later on, after the fact, I read a post where somebody used a wide blade flat tip screwdriver...I went back and was able to really snug up the mirrors on my SC...the flat tip screwdriver works a lot better, the needle nose pliers don't allow you to get them good and snug without slipping off that bolt and scratching it up.

You will see what I mean when you get the mirrors off David, use a flat tip - and another good tip that R22Tech had was DO NOT LOOSEN THE ALLEN BOLT THAT HOLDS THE MIRROR TO THE DOOR ALL THE WAY...just back it out until you can get the mirror out...

...or you'll be fishing the other part of the holdown assembly out of your door, but then you mentioned you already had the door panel off.

David,
When last tightening my side view mirror - i loosened the hold assembly a bit too much and the piece fell right to the bottom of the door. Very agravating, to say the least. Should this happen to you (or anyone else) there is no need to remove the entire door panel. Just take out your door speaker, stick your hand thru the hole and that will give you access to the base area - allowing you to fish out the mirror piece. This process should take you 5 min. - as opposed to 3 hours.

best,
Maurice
