Default Rust bubbles

Hi all,

I've just bought a '79 SC Targa Sport which is in great original condition - still with the original paint (Talbot Yellow). The only bad point I could find was a couple of rust bubbles below the headlamp on the front n/s wing.

(actually, this was pointed out by the PO before the PPI was carried out).

What is the best eay to adrees this..does it mean that the wing is shot and will require replacement? The bubbles - three in total grouped in an area the size of a dime - have lifted the paint by about 1-2 mm.

Regards

Jon J

It is a rust problem even galvanized 911's are prone to.
The problem lies with all the hollow spaces behind the area in question.
Dirt is trapped in there; normal washing just can't get it out. It gets wet and stays that way for long periods, with resultant corrosion.

When I first got my car, I put it up on stands and took off the wheels.
Under a strong worklamp, I was astonished at all the impacted dirt that I dug out from fenders, front and rear bumper and valence areas.
And my car *looked* clean!!

mines the same it's annoying to replace a whole wing for an area of rust that size but the tinworm just goes next door otherwise, what about where inside around the doorlock ?

i think the only way to do it is replace it, i have the same problem and had it rust treated and reapainted a year ago and the rust is back

its such a shame as the rest of the wing is perfect

Hi Millzee,

Go on, scare me to death....can you give me a ballpark figure for the replacement.....I'm used to 928 wings @ c.£ 1000 + paint + fitting etc. so figure the 911 must be around the same.

i haven't had it done yet but your looking at about £500 for a replacement wing, then about £300 for paint and prep.

The problem i am having is finding a good quality genuine porsche second hand wing, as i have heard the replacements are poor quality and not galvanised.

I have the same issues with my wings, when I bought the car there were no signs of bubbling, I also did the usual touch checks under the arches and all seemed fine! But after 6 months of owning my 911, one bubble apeeared then another, then another and so on, mainly around the healamp and side indicators.

With replacement wings selling for £600 each, I have opted for good quality Fiberglass wings with steel headlamp bowls, never want this rust issue again, and it seems 911's are prone to rust around these areas, and nothing you can do.

I managed to pick a brand new pair up on eBay for £200 - they normally retail for over £400 a pair.

Might be worth a thought.
