flat six,

On my '86 Carrera the intake is located under the passenger side foot-well, behind the wooden floorboard. The intake incorporates the bi-metallic switch blower resistor pack and looks like 'toaster coils' or 'springs' in a tube.

This intake feeds the A/C evaporator and its enclosure in the smuggler's box (accessible from under the carpet in the front trunk) with upward airflow through the evaporator itself via the blower (sucker?) located on top of the evaporator.

Your problem may be that the bottom of the evaporator itself has become clogged, over time, with junk that holds moisture and promotes foul smells. Your evaporator box drain could also be clogged, causing the enclosure to hold condensation moisture, which could cause the same problem.

While operating the A/C, if you regularly see water freely dripping from the right mid-front bottom of the car, then your drain would appear to be working.

If the cause is crap on the bottom side of the evaporator the only cure is to remove it and clean the coil. This would require an evacuation of the system, disconnecting the A/C hoses to the evaporator and removal and disassembly of the evaporator enclosure/coil unit. A great side benefit of cleaning a dirty/clogged evaporator is improved cooling.

You may try a deodorant of your choice, but if the smell comes back it probably indicates a need to clean the evaporator, its enclosure and make sure the evaporator enclosure drain is free and clear.

Good Luck!

Barry
