Default 911 Carrera Climate Control Cables?

I need some help from someone who has restored a 80's 911. I've got troubles trying to get the F***ing dash controls to act like they are supposed to. I've cleaned, disassembled and/or lubed everything from the dash controls to the flap doors. The flap doors and control ***** are not the problem. They are smooth operating. The flap doors are effortless to move. The cable guides, or tubes, or sheaths.....are the problem. I took each one apart, sanded the cables, lubed the "guides" and checked their operation. Everything is okay until I route them, properly I might add, and attach them. Then suddenly there is just enough combined resistance to cause the ***** to feel spongy and snap back.

I have been at this for 12 hours over the last 2 days. That is no exaggeration. I have tried every combination of routing and adjustment. This post is a last resort.

I looked at every Porsche parts house that I know of and nobody lists these cables or guides. Plenty cables for heat control, but nothing for the dash controls.

Can anybody share some experience?

They are called Bowden cables and yes they can be a pain. I bet there is a groove worn inside the cable sheath and it's hanging up. You may need to use a recycler. Mine are spongy too and move out of position a little but don't snap back
Did you try a bicycle shop for a similar size ?

Now that's brilliant! I had not thought of grooves inside. Now I've turned the guide tubes every which way and I bet they're all out of whack inside. It makes sense.

I had thought about cycle cables but wanted confirmation that new aftermarket pieces were not available before I went that way.

Thanks Iceman!

Mine do this too! You should think about making a little DIY thread once you get everything sorted out, and you find the culprit. I'm sure there are many others who have this issue as well. Good stuff!

having a 964 i'd not want servos.... those things are $400 each when working, fine... but in another 20 years i'd prefer manual cables.

964 heating system servos are filled with german pixie dust.
If I could figure out a way to adapt an RC servo I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Umm, not sure you'll have much luck at a cycle shop. 911 climate control cables are solid wire and are used to both push and pull whereas virtually all cycle cables are braided and only used to pull; they're not stiff enough to use in push applications.

Yes, assuming that one end of the inner cable is straight enough to allow you to push it into the new outer cable.

I think new cables are part number 911 572 114 00 and about $15 each?

And Felix is the winner!

I was just logging on to tell you guys that the Porsche Dealership in Annapolis will have new ones to me on Monday. 3 for $41.00! No custom bowdens needed. No servos. No DIY writeup.

Thanks for the replies and help. If any of you are in the Easton, MD area and need help I'm Porsche friendly....Duramteric and all.
