Default questions on 1986 3.2

hello,
there's a beautiful white 86 3.2 for sale in my area. Although I'm looking for 964s, but this one is one of the better 3.2s. What I like to know is for an 86 model, what should I look out for? I think this doesn't come with the g50 tranny right? if not, is it possible to fit a g50 in down the road?

thanks

If you want a 964, get a 964. If you want a 911 w/ G50, get a 87-89 model. If you want a 911 w/ 915, & the '86 you have found excites you (beautiful, driving satisfaction, good history, PPI, price & etc.) - maybe you should seriously consider it as it sits. perhaps drive it back-to-back w/ a 964?

The general consensus seems to be that a properly functioning 915 doesn't need to be upgraded to G50 just because...
plus it's not cheap. enjoy!

I love my '86. Have had it for 3 years. I had originally been looking for an '87 -'89 specifically for the G50, however I find although the 915 can be a bit challenging at times, I do not regret my decision as the car is in such great shape. If you are looking to rip up and down through the gears, then stay away from the 915, however if you "learn" how to shift the 915, it performs nearly as well, especially after shifting out of 2nd on up and shifting down to 2nd. Personally I would not upgrade from a 915 to a G50 as it does not fit right in (mods needed). If you want a G50, get an '87 - '89 P-car.

Good luck!

i tried a 915 tranny 911. it shifted like my dad's old classic beetle. while i will get used to it, i doubt my wife will be too happy. although that means she will drive it less.
as for 964 vs. 3.2, well both have pros and cons. we both like 964s because it's newer and the interior is a bit nicer. however the penalty is weight. the 3.2s are much lighter therefore it's tossable = more fun in autoX. also a 3.2 is cheaper than a 964 assuming both are in good conditions. anyways i've decided to go investigate this white 3.2. thanks.

I dont mind the 915.

The '86 was a good year for the 911. The 915 is a strong transmission and it has certain advantages relating mainly to weight and maintenance, particularly if you might ever consider tracking it. A PPI is essential, as are service records. If no records, think about a lower price, perhaps much lower, regardless of the exterior cosmetics.

Good luck,
Dan

Another point to consider is that if you transplant a G-50 into a 915 car, it tends to reduce the resale value a bit or limit your market of potential buyers. A completely stock car is always easier to sell than a modified one. When selling a modified car, there are always more hesitations from prospective buyers because of questions about who did the modification, how good the parts were that were used to modify the car, etc.

I agree with the above posts. If you want a 964, get a 964. If you want a G-50 3.2 then get a G-50 car.

I also agree with Dan above that 1986 was a great year. Improved ventilation, light weight, rock solid reliability in both the motor and transmission, classic good looks.

Good luck!
Jay
