New (to me) '87 Carrera
Hi all,
I've been lurking around here learning from previous posts. As of today, I've joined your ranks as I came to an agreement on purchasing an '87 Carrera. It had a good PPI, including a perfect leak down test. The car should make my wallet lighter and my garage heavier by the end of the week.
I'm very excited. I've wanted a 911 ever since I was a small kid watching my neighbor drive off to time trials in his early 70s 911S with a duck tail. He'd come by my house driving slowly with the engine screaming at 4000 rpm or something. As a kid I was pretty sure that was the coolest thing in the world. Come to think of it, I still think so. His was red, and so is mine.
I've been flogging my 968 for almost six years now. Love the car, but I really wanted to understand 911s. Now's my chance. I'll probably have questions for you all as I get familiar with this. In the meanwhile, I will try to post a picture of my new car here. (Attribute my newness if this doesn't work...).
Best regards and happy motoring.

Awesome looking coupe!!!! Welcome to the 911 madness. Those wheels look great on your car. I'm curious too--what wheels are those? Kinesis Supercups? What size wheels and tires?

Congratulations........i just went from a 911 to a 968, both great cars.
968 is a nice daily driver and handles well, but it doesnt have the character or feel of a 911.
I got rid of the 911 because I needed a daily driver and the 911 wasnt gonna cut it. I kinda regret selling my car, but because of various personal issues i was forced to.
A 968 can be substituted with many cars, an M3, VW,Audi, BMW, Japanese Cars...... The '87-'89 cars are real special, and I will eventually buy another one down the line.....
.......but there is only one 911....There is no Substitute

Thanks for the welcome!
I like the wheels too. Actually I was looking for a coupe with Fuchs, but I liked this car and really liked the look with the wheels. I'm still trying to track down the type of wheel. The prior owner has a receipt from a local wheel seller which lists them as "Porsche factory" wheels. They do appear to be 2 or 3 piece and the outer rim appears to be aluminum similar to my Fikses on the 968. However, my mechanic doesn't recognize them as Porsche wheels. I like the look of the little fasteners which give it the multi-piece look. They are 17" with 205s on the front and 255s on the back. When I get the car I'll check the widths of the rims.
Mike, nice looking coupe. I generally like subtlety, but I really like red. My 968 is red too. How come some cars, like yours, have a black guard/paint protection ahead of the rear wheels while other don't?
Agent325, I hope you like the 968. It's certainly rarer and more unique than the other cars you list. I found that car handles very well and is a blast to drive. On the track it is very fast. The four cylinder motor sounds pretty cool, but I agree it doesn't have the character of a 911. I'm actually a bit nervous about adapting to the different handling characteristics of a 911 compared to the 968. A friend who just went from a 944T to a 78 911 describes it as not being too much harder to drive if you respect the tail, it's just much less forgiving if you lift and get the rear end moving while turning. My education awaits.

Nice 911. I was wondering how fast that one was going to sell. I had seen it listed on http://www.europeanlocators.com/ .
Looks like you bought a nice one.

Very nice car, Henry.
I believe the stone guard (or 'sharkfin')you refer to was standard or an option on 930s only. You can get them aftermarket in that larger Turbo size, like Mike has, or a slimmer cut for SC/Carreras.
I put the slimmer cut on mine as much to cover up all the stone chips as to protect it from more.
The consensus is that it looks better on darker cars where there's not so much contrast. Over to you.
It's just 3M thick plastic stone guard tape. Works like a champ and doesn't get beat up like the clear stuff.

The wheels do look like Kinesis Supercups to me. The way to know for sure is to look at the back of the spoke. Kinesis is cast into the back of the spoke. There is also a serial number that we can use to track down what size they are, what offset, age, original owner etc. There is also some special pricing on Supercup wheels right now, check with your local dealer.

Hey, Alan (Kinesis)
The Supercup wheels look awesome, but i was wondering why the center of the wheel (spokes) appear to be made for a 17" wheel, placed in a 18" split rim? The 993 board has had quite a few threads on different "RS" type wheels, including Kinesis, Speedline, Gemballa, etc. Many of the guys like the wheel, but would prefer a larger diameter center, and a smaller area where the nuts/bolts around the perifery are.
Would appreciate your comments.
Thanks
Mike

Gorgeous car!! You will enjoy it for a long time. I have found the 3.2 to be very trouble free, and a very involving drive - even more so that a standard 964. Is that a sunroof delete??
