It's freaking nerve racking. The newer cars I know what needs to be done, the computers tell you. The the older ones... Voodoo to me! Good news is I learned a TON from the Pelican who helped me out. Super generous and helpful!

Great Chris,

I'll be able to breathe easy today. (pun intended)

Passed this year even cleaner. I had engine out and we replaced every vacuum line in the car, valve adjustment, etc...

Did you put the CAT back on? I suspect you did to get those results.

ya. I don’t think these will pass w/o a cat.

guessing the earlier years have less stringent requirements. Technically could still fail the visual. This smog guy was quick. Last time i had the 964 sniffed the guy literally went line by line in the book and looked for every component. The only reason this one popped the rear hatch was to catch the ignition pulse for the dyno.

Ah well the equipment swap ritual.

Yes, I am definitely worried about the visual each time. They do examine the car using the book to be sure it has the emissions devices, and "look" underneath, but they clearly have no idea what they are looking for underneath - heat exchangers seem to throw them off from a typical exhaust into a cat type of system.

Another reason to love California - the every other year smog test. Of course my 80 SC is a test only so they really look it over, I had a similar problem last time, ran too rich, "fixed" the problem, it ran awful but passed, quickly put it back the way it was and the car is very happy again. Get to go through it again soon, ugh.

Yeah, you know the drill, they have like 3 levels of **** probing here: normal smog check, test only/star station smog check, referee smog check. My 89 is part of a 'high emitter profile' so I get to go to the test only stations. What I've found is a lot of inconsistency on the **** probing these guys do. I found a good one this time around. Hop on the dyno and 'go'.

Anyway, clean for 2 more years!
