My ex forced me to sell my 1985 911 in 2003. Due to Child Support and her never ending need for $, a 911 was way too conspicuous. As recently as last year she came looking for more money, court yet again. It was a last ditch effort on her part as the kids are leaving home. For those women on the forum, I share custody and carried 75% of the load!!
Wow, didn't realize how angry I was
Ok, it's time for a 996 or 997...budget @ 30K. Manual/hardtop. I've read everything on IMS and understand the options. As background, I have recently rebuilt a motorcycle engine. So I'm pretty good in the garage and would budget a IMS Replacement and/or Pressurized oil feed. plus clutch of course.
My goal is to drive it everyday, rain or shine. What should I get? 997 Carrera....996 4S?
Can you even find a 997 carrera for 30k? You should try the watercooled 996/997 forums, but since you used to own an 85 carrera, I think you knew that you were asking this question in the "wrong" forum, because deep down inside your love for the aircooleds still led you here lol.
Nothing like air-cooled 911's. However if you are not interested in one of those again, then I would say if budget is a concern, target the 90-94 model years for the best bag for the buck. However if you can swing some additional cash, the 993's are just terrific cars.

Someone hasn't been doing their pricing homework on 964's and 993's
Actually market has softened a tad on SCs, too. Driver-quality targas being listed in the mid 20s. $30k right now should buy you a pretty decent middie or SC.
If you want a more modern car get a 2009 and up Carreras. The base cars are really good the dfi motor has proven quite reliable, and no IMS issues. Find one with some miles on it and I bet you're not too far off 30. I saw one for under 40 recently that looked really decent.
If you want old you're looking for a car that needs some work at 30k

Well if you can stomach the chance of bore scoring at some point
What am I missing? The 964 is less expensive than the 3.2 G50 cars. I then said if he can swing some additional cash, the 993 is a great car. Yes, they are more expensive than both of the others, but still a great car. I wish I still had my '97 S coupe.
Tried to shoot you a PM, but your account won't allow it. Shoot me a PM if you are interested in a fixer up air cooled SC that runs strong for that price range.
