Well that's not very purist now is it?!?!?

That's one sweet car...

Watt,

Yes, I came to that realization a little late in the game, but it is definitely noted.

Looks absolutely fantastic.

Christian,

I just purchased Paul Frere's "The 911 Story". Thanks for the recommendation. The reading is a bit dense, but it is extremeley informative.

I've been on a couple of 911 big rides.. if my 911 can't run for 10k miles it's in need of maintance.. So, IMO, a cross country rider is much different than a track car. Understanding the HP mentality and how to deal with it is as important as being able to handle poor fuel.
And it's no fun to drive a noticably attention getting 911 in the right lane at the speed limit. Radar detector, CB radio, laser jammer, tools, spare parts, CHT gauge, volt gauge, etc. is basic IMO for a cross country

Ron,

I'm sure you're right about the comfort aspect, but I think it will be a once in a lifetime type of experience. There will be stretches where the car can exercise it's potential a bit. I'm pretty sure we'll be stopping at some tracks also. After the trip I'll probably relegate the car to track duty and the occasional trip to the grocery store.

Jack,

I finally finished reading your links.

What an ordeal! Sounds like it was worth every penny and then some!

You listed your parts suppliers, but do you think you could provide some websites? Do they even have websites?

Seeing as to how you did such a fantastic job on an RSR I'm inclined to go the 935 route, although I'll look like a horse's *** hauling groceries with a car like that.

My major concerns are accurate bodywork and miscellaneous bits that might be a nightmare to get. Aside from that I'm definitely going the rollcage route, as you did, and I'll also be undertaking the weight trimming crusade.

Who helped you with suspension set up and the like? Camber settings, and shock adjustment? Looks like you are pretty good around a track. What would you suggest for a track rookie who wants to have a track/everyday car. Especially given how it will be a replica of a race car.

Cheers

Taek,

Here's a real 935 that was modded down into a street car.

Also, here's a link to fiberglass 935 panels.

Buy'em then have your boys auto-clave'em.

Bolt on to a modded 930 <Go see the 930 Forum>

and you've got a sub $50k Monster from Hell.

Thanks!

I like the original one, but it doesn't quite seem to be what I'm looking for. I do want to, at one point, get this thing to 750 hp spec. Also gut the interior completely to race trim.

Any idea how faithful to original these are?

Will definitely check out the 930 Forum.

Cheers

You're not going to get to 750hp from these starting points.

Check out this thread concerning 935 engines and HP.

Thanks again!

I don't plan on consistently hitting 750 hp. The race cars did this at max output with 1.5 bar. Should be enough reliability to run me across the country, given how I'll only hit that limit a few times a day unlike the racers which hit it almost throughout the entire lap. I don't mind spending for upkeep. I just want to keep the cost low for building the car. That's the hard part to sell the wife. Once the car is done...it's just maintenance.

Cheers

There is no way you can get a 750 HP 935 replica for $50,000 (at least if you plan to use a Porsche power plant). If you started with a fairly rough, but reasonably sound late 70's to early 80's 930 (to get the 3.3 motor) you are probably at $25K. Seeing as you are re-doing everything, you are not too concerned about cosmetics. If you gut the interior and sell off extra parts that you will be replacing from the body, engine, and interior, you may recoup $3-5K. So let's say $22K in at this point. Now, just building a 3.4 liter twin plug motor (without EFI) that will be reliable enough for your cross country trip you are probably at $25K and near the end of your budget. You have not even started with the body, interior, or suspension. If oyu want to go this route and have any chance of staying within your budget, you would be better off buying someone else's project car.

Actually Bill. That's what I'm hoping to do...find another person's project that is. I'm hoping to have the 930 for less than $25k. I've seen them for a lot less. So, maybe get one for around $20k. Maybe not hit the 750hp mark right off the bat, but I wanted to spend around $15k on the engine. That would leave me with $15k for the body and suspension. I may be short a little for paint and such.

How much of these costs are in labor? I'm guessing a good 50%, based on what I've seen in restoration jobs. Anyone have any insight?

Cheers
