new purchase going 90 mph and a little old lady in a prius passes me maybe this car has the wrong dial on my speedo it has 180 for top speed I have seen many with 150 mph as the high end on the dial can someone with the knowledge please tell me which is the proper speedometer for this year 911 sc
and confirm my fears that that the prius can't go that fast ....
When Carter was president, the NHTSB decreed a 90 MPH max on speedometers (only the Corvette was given an exception). I assume yours had been swapped out (or an new dial fitted and recalibrated). To check your calibration—if you have mile markers on a local freeway—set your speed at 60 MPH and see how long it takes you to go the measured mile. 60 sec = 60 mph.
As far as a Pius (spelling intentional), Al Gore's son got ticketed for doing a bit over 100 MPH in one. Granted it was a long downhill section on CA73 (toll road in Orange County CA)
Yes, you have the incorrect/non original speedo in your car. The US delivered 911SC's had the 150 mph speedo until late 1979 when they switched to the idiotic but federally mandated 85 mph speedo. This continued until the middle of 1982 when they switched back to the 150 and sometimes 160 mph speedo. The 180 was reserved for the Turbo but was often sold back in the day as a replacement for the 85. Pull the speedo out (simple press fit) and it will have a date code on the back. Compare that date vs the other gauges and the build date of your car. You will likely find it has a different date than the others. Its also possible it was the original speedo that someone like North Hollywood converted. Very common on these cars but also means most of the them are highly suspect as to actual vehicle miles unless they have documentation to support it.
I was driving to a C&C yesterday on RT 80 in NJ and I saw the cop way up ahead slowed down to the speed limit and a prius must have passed me on the right at around 100mph. Needless to say the cop really wanted me but was stuck pulling over the prius instead.
