I currently have 6&7 Fuchs on my modified '77' 3.0 Carrera with Bilstein sport shocks. The ride quality is pure horror show on the roads here in Massachusetts, (they have to be the worst in the nation). A knowledgeable friend of mine said switching to 7&8 Fuchs and going from a 15" tire to a 16" tire would give me a better ride quality, and was dollar for dollar the best performance modification considering my current set up. I'm pondering purchasing a set new OEM Fuchs. How much should I be paying for a set and where can I get the best deal on this set up. I use to travel to Canada to buy parts and riding apparel for my motorcycles. I use to save a lot due to the US/Canada dollar differential. Can anyone steer me in the right direction<Grin> What are nice set of used 6&7 Fuchs with near new Yoko AVS's worth?

Greetings,
I think your ride will only get harder with a lower profile tire on the 16' wheel. I would keep the 15s if a softer ride is what you are after. Perhaps the Bilsteins are too firm for you. You can always get them revalved, or maybe your torsion bars are too thick for the ride you are looking for. I would look to the suspension before switching wheels.
Best,
Don.

All things equal, wider larger diameter wheels are going to give you a stiffer ride. The reduced tire side wall height being the largest contributor ......

i believe the 15 in. wheel option was as well referred to as the "soft ride " option - my 1985 has this option and works well with pirelli tires

16s will not improve your ride quality, and will likely make it worse.
If you have stock torsion bars, the bilstein sports are too much shock. You are over-dampened. If you want to improve ride quality, change to HD shocks. Keep your wheels.

Thanks for the input everyone. 'Creaturecat' the comfort option for that year had Fuchs 14" wheels and softer shocks and was speed governed to 130 MPH. My car was completely rebuilt by Rensport and was not put together without a lot of thought. I suspect the former owner had the track in mind. One thing occurs to me was tire pressure. I believe I was told the correct tire pressure for the car, running Yoko AVS's was 38 front, 35 rear. The drivers manual for that year calls for 29 psi front and 34 rear. That might the problem, as well. MY BMW K1200RS motorcycle had adjust 'on the fly' Koni's, unbelievable setup. Whatever I do, I think moving to a different State might be cheaper alternative<grin>. The best roads I've found were south of Munich....
