Default Speedometer Intermittent

Thought I posted this but can't find it.

My speedometer on my '88 911 is intermittent. Only happened a few times this week, but the speedo drops to zero and odd/trip odd stop moving. The backlighting still works.

Other than checking the connections on the back of the gauge, what else can I look for? I'm assuming something is loose. If there is a specific speed sensor, I'd appreciate any info. I'm going in for the annual service in about 6 weeks, but would like to fix it myself if able.

Thanks!

Yes there is a sensor. I believe it is located on your transaxle near one of your axles. I don't have a G50, so you'll have to have a look as to which side. Cheers

This a fairly common problem. Mine has a bad sender. It is held in by one bolt on the driver's side of the transaxle. It is an easy job to replace it. Mine would play dead for a few minutes each time I started the car. Be sure it is not the speedometer before ordering the part as it is about $100. Part # is : 911-606-910-01. Shop around for a good price.

I'll check the sender...I had the gauges rebuilt/serviced a few years back so most likely the sender. Will check if something is loose before ordering.

Thanks!

Connection on the transaxle looked solid.

Pulled the gauge out and found a wire hanging freely with a connected. However, the back of the speedo has three connections. One has three wires, and the other two have two wires. The hanging wire is red. Any thoughts?

After a long drive this week, I'm convinced it is the sender. Though it looked secure, it probably needs replacing. The speedometer only failed twice on me and for just a few seconds each time. However, one time it failed, I had the cruise control set and when the speedometer failed, the cruise control disengaged leading me to conclude that the sender is going.

Sure does sound like it. Look st the bright side. You have one or two kilometres less showing on your car than you actually have. 😁
