Mine in my 1987 Carrera looked the same- not sure if it was ever inflated or not- didn't look like it had.
Had a blow out and decided to give it a try. Inflated itself perfectly- drove it all the way home-20-30 miles. Still had all it's air in it the next morning when i delt with it. Deflated it and put it back in the trunk for the next time! What a concept. Leave it to Porsche engineering- way ahead of their time, again.

Wow !!! thanks for the good news I sure would not have expected ... pressure it up ... run it on the road and drop the air and it goes right back to the space saver mode ... hope I keep it under the bonnet ... thanks

I hooked an inflator up to mine, set it for 25 psi, and went into the house while it inflated. After I heard the inflator turn itself off, I waited another 30 minutes before I went near it. Looked fine, and deflated normally, but I don't know that I would ever drive on it, other than onto a trailer.
