Default oil temperature gauge question

My oil temp gauge stopped working. I believe it's getting power because when I turn the key to the "on" position the gauge jumps but does not record a temperature when the car is operating? Any help would be appreciated.

Check the wires. One may be loose. Clean them to ensure a positive connection.

go to the sender in the back of the engine .. its to the right of the fan ( not the round cylinder the other one . Pull off the slide on connector with the ignition on and ground it against the engine. The guage should go full deflection , ( I just cant remember if grounding it sends to max or min ) .

if you see the guage swing from max to min as you ground and unground it it is the sender.

If not it is the guage or wiring.

Thanks. i'll try that tonight. I did look at the wire connected to the sender yesterday and it was connected but not tightly. I was able to slide it up and down in the connection to the sender. Is it supposed to be loosely connected like that?

I pinched mine a little for a tighter fit , but while its loose take it off and do the test.
