87 3.2 911 Targa purchase
Hi guys
Recently I saw a 3.2 Targa with
250000 miles .....
Price was $20000 cnd
Has turbo brakes
There was no leaks from engine
And seems to run very strong !
My question is at 250000 miles .... when am I expecting a full engine rebuild ? Cost ?
Anything else I can say to bargin the price ?
Seller has no history of the car.
I plan to find a base for a project weekend track car.

Well, lots of people are convinced that 930 brakes will cost you upwards of $10,000.....so for $20,000 you get the entire car....sounds like a deal. Of course I paid $20,000 for my car when it had 50,000 miles and the 930 brakes cost me more like $3,000, but I'm no expert.

Several people have claimed 300,000 until rebuild. I think if you were going to have issues they would have shown up already. Lots of talk about valve guides and oil consumption. Any idea of the number of miles per quart the car gets? Some cars are still getting 1,000 miles per quart. I think the max acceptable is a number closer to 400 miles per quart.

250k Km is about 150kmiles. Most find the bottom end of these cars close to indestructable, but the valve guides usually have been done by about that mileage. My car has 105k miles and goes through a quart every 2500 miles or so. I believe Porsche specs a litre of oil every 1000 km as maximum consumption before work MUST be done.I do have an aquaintance that has >300k miles on his 3.2 without taking the heads off, but that is quite unusual. A rebuild on these cars is a big ticket item, even if you don't choose to split the case...ie restrict yourself to attending to the heads. The tranny at that mileage could have issues as well. The earlier cars have a 915 which is less costly to rebuild but by most accounts the later G50 has a longer life and is more lenient with bad driving habits. Cheers and good luck

Ok there are a few issues at play here
you state 250,000 miles at 20K Canadian
Are you in the US or Canada ?
if you are in the US you will be getting a 30% discount on exchange right there , so that makes an 87 targa about 14K , you should be scooping that as soon as possible regardless of Milage.
Secondly if the 250k is in miles not kilometers and it is a US car you are repatriating I don't think there are any duties to bring it back.
Thirdly if it is in fact 250K in Kilometers not miles , makes it an even better deal.
Fourth , if it is 250 k mikes and you are a Canadian Buying it In Canada I still think that is a very decent deal in todays market and gives you some room for a top end if you need it .
