Default non working tach

My wife and I went for a drive in our 1986 911 and I noticed the tach would not move. Is this a common problem, any solutions? Thanks

Take it out and clean all of the electrical contacts....could be just a lost ground.
BTW, just pull/wiggle it out of the dash...no big deal but a little tight.

Default In case it's rebuild time...

I'd suggest these guys: http://www.paspeedo.com/
Palo Alto Speedo in NorCal, they did a great job turning mine around when the cruise control stopped working (lost tach signal).
Good luck!

Make sure the Pulse Sender is operational.

Sorry, I looked up the Speedometer. The pulse sender is located on the side of the transmission and senses the rotation speed of the transmission which is sent to the speedo. You probably have a ground or wire off one of the points on the Tach. I would pull it out and check them.

Default non working tach

Wait a minute ....
Doesn't that have the shift light ?
Does the shift light come on when it's suppose to ? If that seems to be working as it should but just the needle not working its your tach as its getting signal
If no shift light it could be external. Know someone you can do a quick swap with ?

Just back from a short drive. All lights work on the tach, signals, shift light, high beam indicator and the regular light. Pulled the tach out and unplugged and plugged the wiring harness in a few times, all connections look good. Where does the tqch hook up to the engine, any other suggestions?

if the shift light is working , then the issue is inside your tach , get a new one or send it to north hollywood or Palo Alto for repair i would say,

Does anyone know where the tach attaches to the engine?

It's electric and connected to you CDI...if all of the other electrical items are working it may need internal work as Ice said.

p.s....a practical upgrade is a volt meter added/placed on the face as the idiot light doesn't give fair warning of overcharging. My next 'upgrade'.

Do you know anyone with a similar car who will swap with you for a verification check? Just to see if theirs works in your car.

No, but it would be easy to do.

I had same symptoms... sent to North Hollywood... they were fantastic. It came back looking brand new. I also got them to disable the annoying shift light (which tells you to shift right when things get fun).

Thought about splurging on the integrated volt meter... but couldn't justify the added cost at the time.
