Help a pcar buyer thread
I wanted to start a thread where buyers (wannabes like me) can get info on cars we spot online. Good value cars are snapped up within minutes, so this won't help, but flippers seem to be holding onto them for a few months now (perhaps an indication that cars are being overpriced). With that in mind, help us spot odd things, problems, pricing, and warnings.
Buyers post the cars you want info on.
Owners, warn us, help us, save us...

Here is one that has been on cars.com/cargurus for about 3 months now. Recently published on Pelican: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...-serviced.html
A black 82 with 96k miles, tan interior for a high price of $28,900. A cursory internet search suggests they may have bought the car for less than $21,000 a few months back.
From what I see, the dash is warped, the rear speaker housing is torn.
Normal wear and tear with chips in paint (more pictures on dealer's web show a chip in paint on passenger side, I believe)
BBS wheels.
Do the rocker panels look off?
What's up with the mask over the rear view mirrors?
I'm not a fan of the full tan interior but I do have black jeep with cognac (orangish-brown) seats (the rest of the interior is black) so I'm a little intrigued.

This one is on the west coast of Canada. With the strong US dollar, that would be around 31,000US for a restored 87 Targa. Not sure that helps, but here it is.

Here is a 78 for sale with a custom rebuilt engine http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/cto/4873193910.html
Engine sounds:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ht-J...ature=youtu.be
Price seems a bit high for an SC to me (about what I'd offer for an excellent 84-86), but I know nothing of pcar prices with custom engines. May need a tune and needs new tires (they are 10 years old). Seller seems nice and honest about the car's needs. Says the engine has 11k miles but was built in 1991.
Yes, the turbo tail has to go....
Other thoughts?

Also not sure if the turbo tail has to go, i guess it depends on the use. I dug up some of those epic "original tail" threads and it seems like the big tail is actually quite functional in terms of aero (as long as you also have a front spoiler). If When I will finally manage to buy an SC, if it comes with a tail like that I might keep it, even if it's not the most elegant.

I like this thread idea. And might be a good place to ask something I've been wondering...
I created a tool last fall that monitors postings for 911s. It monitors all the common sites, most specialist sites and some well known dealer sites. It emails me the new posting within 30 minutes. After seeing hundreds (thousands?) of cars over the months, my experience brings up 2 questions:
1) What happened to all the fixer uppers? Before the market started going crazy like it is now (a little more than 2 years ago), finding a fixer upper for $12k-$15k wasn't too hard. Now every car I see listed is in good to great condition. My best guess is that there was a turning point in the age of these cars where you either had to fix it up or part the car and now the market is full of restored cars and the parted cars are at the chop shop.
2) Would anyone else be interested in a service that gives you instant alerts on 911 listings? It would cost some money to run so I'd charge like $5/month or something but nothing crazy. Just wondering if I should put the effort into making my tool public.
Thanks
Matt

Hopefully some of them are being fixed up... though I noticed that most everyone now lists their car as a "Condition 2 car"
I'd be interested. I'm interested to know what the dealers/flippers are using. I hate to say it, but they might pay more than $5 a month....

Is this a sticker? http://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/de...7188/overview/
How difficult would it be to peel that off?
and what are those wheels?

look for the best that you can afford.
Have it PPI by a good shop in your area as you will need to get to know them once you buy.
1978-1984 SC appear to be the best bang for the buck. Look for unmolested examples.

Oliver's modified 78 SC is back up for sale $27k now
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...che-911sc.html
Previous posts suggests he had some issues and couldn't find a good mechanic to tune the Haltech. I'm a bit concerned about finding a mechanic to help with that engine... but it sure looks like a blast.
