Default 1974-1977 us spec 911 question

Did the us spec 1974-1977 911's come with a factory wide body as an option or were they all narrow body as they left the factory?

There was never a factory wide body option for mid-year 911's either ROW or US spec. The same holds true for the 911SC. The first factory wide body was the M491 option package first made available in 1984 on the 3.2 Carrera which was available until 1989. There was also the slight variation (rare) M470 which is wide body, spoiler delete.

Of course so nobody thinks I forgot, every Turbo from 1975-1989 was a "factory" wide body, but that of course wasn't your question.

If you see a wide body NA mid-year, its a conversion 100% of the time.

Closest thing to a wide body on an NA middie would be a Carrera model.

Great stuff thanks, so there wasn't even a wider rear flare option like the sc's had?

Nossir, just the '76-'77 Turbo Carrera.

okay, that confirms to me that the car I was looking at was definitely altered.

The 1974-1975 US Carrera had rear flares just like an SC, not wide body but certainly wider the a regular mid-year.

Let's not forget the "SC" flared ROW Carrera 3.0 of '76-7. But anyone who has one of those knows what he's got.

And while I can't say 100% sure that nothing in the 2.7L era got send over to Werks 1 for a flare job, I know of one SC in Phoenix (wasn't a customer car) that did get a factory turbo body during the no-US sale 930 years.

There's been a few documented instances, like Penske's '74 Targa with RS flares. But those are the oddball exceptions.
