In today's market, your budget is about $7K low for a car that will not need thousands.
Good examples (driver quality) are still out there, however increasing demand has bumped prices quite a bit.

Unfortunately, $25K is about entry level for these cars anymore, but good news:
Look at life-cycle cost, not purchase price. The biggest cost of any car is depreciation, and a good SC/Carrara will not depreciate.
Also, these cars are eligible for declared value insurance which is quite affordable. This could save you $500/yr.
Thirdly, there is financing out there for legitimate collectable cars, so you can spread the difference over a couple of years.
Finally, buying a well maintained car will save you thousands in repairs over the years, so if you really want one of these cars and plan to keep it for the long-term, it is really not a bad buy based on life-cycle cost.
One of the reasons that these cars are appreciating in the first place.
Good luck and have fun.

How about a Cayman S for $21Khttp://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/ctd/4865947904.html
Any decent air-cooled 911 for unnder $20K will only last a few minutes on the market before being picked up by a flipper. In the past year inventories of decent pre 99 911's for under $25K have dried up on the east coast. Now there are some hack jobs and rollers for less.

I've been searching for a year now and passed on SC's that were listed at 23k a year ago because I thought it was too much. I do believe we are in a bubble, driven by speculators and soon to be bored "collectors" but I've since upped my willingness to pay.
Just did a ride-along with a local owner of a 1982 Porsche 911 and it was excellent. Makes me want one more. Now, I will just hope his wife keeps pressuring him to clean out the garage… I made him an offer

The future will determine whether air cooled Porsches "are in a bubble". In my opinion they are unique in the automotive world, a car that can be reliable @>20 years old,(I drive my 85 on a few thousand mile journeys every year) somehow both visceral and comfortable, excellent parts supply....etc. I don't know about their future as an investment but as a bit of fun in a sea of "appliances", they're hard to beat...and I think will continue to be. Cheers
