Post 944 turbo brakes on 89 carrera ?

I 'm am under the assumption that the mounting holes on the 944 turbo brakes have to be elongated to be able to be mounted. Is this true of the rear brakes as well and what else has to be done for this modification. what about the rotors , front and rear. TIA

Let me start w/ this. I don't think that this is a good idea!!

If you want better brakes get a full turbo setup, If you don't want to spend that much get a good brake cooling setup, good fresh fluid and appropriate pads.

Now that I've got that done . The 3.5" ears on the front struts are ~88.9mm, the stock axial mounting holes are ~94mm, so if you insist, yes, they can be elongated and moved a tad radially.

In the back the 3" ears are ~76.2mm. So the ~94mm caliper holes need to be plugged and redrilled at ~76.2mm, w/ one very significant caveat. The caliper radial distance is appropriate for the 309mm 930 rotor not the 290mm 911rotor.

I will finish w/ another negative comment on this mod, the 911(even the wider Carrera)rotors are too thin for the 964 calipers.

There's an article on tech.rennlist.com that talks about converting 911 brakes to Turbo brakes, which can be read here. In addition, you'll find some other articles there on brake upgrades there, and Bill Verburg has some excellent brake information and recommendations on what fits on his web sites.

Bill and Bill ;thx for the info. I just wanted to know for my own info as I often wondered why someone would do this. I have many, many sets of the 944 turbo brakes and people keep asking me that same question all the time. That said, I can now just tell them to do it the right way. Thx

Good brakes are simply not inexpensive to do but,..................neither is a proper engine,...

As an aside, I have an extra set of 930 front struts / shocks - if I were to put these in my 87 Carrera, would I then be able to mount 930 Brakes and rotors in front (and what would need to be done in the rear).

The only difference between the 911 struts and 930 struts is the shock inserts. The 930 caliper is a straight bolt on to either. The hard part is the correct rotor and zero o/s hat. These are available at many places with several levels of quality, I would start by talking to Steve Weiner at Rennsport Systems they have some of the better choices in this area. The stock 309x28mm rear 930 rotor is a bolt in which will retain the stock e-brake in the back, but the 930 calipers will need to be modified. This mod, unfortunately, is not a diy so again I would contact Steve.

Putting the 964/944 calipers on the front of a 911 is simple. It is not an upgrade. Rather than reiterate what has already been written please read the following page brake upgrades

thanks guys, this is really informative stuff. My question is,which thicker rotors can be installed on the 911 to allow sensible 951 caliper fitment? l assume the 944 turbo rotor won`t fit or someone would have said so.On the rears one can use 930 rotors once the 951 caliper is reworked, but which year? l have an 84 carrera. Thanks for any input here.l know this is a less then perfect brake mod,but l`ve already got the calipers and l want to use them if l can do it with thicker rotors..

This is the only way I would do it short of 930 rotors all around. More machining & $ is necessary for 930 rotors though
