Default DIY: Replaced door speakers, re-used original grills

Hello RLers,

Replaced the door speakers in my '89 911 Targa. Was not quite trivial to do. You need a low overhead ratchet-style screw driver to remove the speakers ($10 at Sears). New speakers did not fit inside grill mount ring so had to grind out the inside diameter of the ring. Speaker mounting tabs did not fit in old grill mount ring so had to grind down the four tabs on each speaker. Speaker wires were not long enough so had to add a 2" extension on one wire. Other than that all went as planned! Pics show:
1. Old and new speakers - note old foam edge is completely gone
2. Grinding out the inside diameter of the grill mount ring
3. Reduced speaker mounting tab next to un-reduced one
4. Adding extension to ground wire
5. Low profile ratchet-style screw-driver is a must

Thanks for looking,

Yep, that's how it's done. Got mine done one day while visiting the museum at Galpin Auto Sports. Yes, where Pimp My Ride was being filmed.

It might have been easier to remove the door pocket.

my '89 911 door pocket is hooked under the door-handle/door-latch assembly so that has to come off or at least loosen the two lower allen bolts, to get the door pocket to come off. This is enough of a pain that using the offset screw-driver is much easier and far quicker. Also I worry that every time I pull off and then tighten the door pocket screws I am widening/enlarging the screw holes so one day they will strip. The rear-most screw is stripped and I had to scrounge a bigger screw to hold the door pocket tightly. The $10 Sears low-profile ratchet screw driver works like a champ so is no problem to pop the speakers off and on again.

Did you know there is a realy nice adapter available for this. A guy makes them on pelican I have them and they work quite well. Holes line up with factory door speaker holes. Then you make your own holes for your speakers. Works great based on feedback and pics. I have mine right here

Iceman,
I am looking at the same issues. Can you point me toward the source of the adapter?

Thanks
